Constipated Cat

Does anyone else have a cat with chronic constipation? I have been treating Lucy for about 4 years now and am wondering what someone else may be doing to help this situation.

I'm concerned about doing the surgery...has anyone done this with any success??

Re: Constipated Cat

My sister's vet gave her special prescriptive food for her cat. Not sure what the name of it was though. It definitely helped as she has not had a problem since.

My cat was constipated last year. We took him to the hospital and they gave us liquid Lactulose to help him.

After that, we changed his dry food to Innova Lite. It has more fiber which helps. Do you feed your cat wet food?? The extra moisture in your cat's diet may help.

Re: Constipated Cat

Thanks.

Lucy's been on a "cocktail" for almost 4 years now - Cisapride and Lactulose...and I feed her can food for overweight cats (she's 16lbs) and she gets a little bit of kibble at night.

It seems to be once a year where she needs to be "excavated" - they put her under and use a warm, soapy enema and manually extract the feces Chat Icon (The first year, she had it done 3 times.) I can't imagine what all this stress and anasthesia has done to her - though oddly, she is 100% healthy otherwise Chat Icon

I guess I was curious to see if anyone has had the surgery...I've read lots about it but I'm still skeptical. It seems if the Dr is off a smidge, she could "leak" 24/7...though there is a corrective surgery for that. Again, all that anasthesia and stress Chat Icon

ETA: Can you get the Innova OTC or is it Rx?

Colleen -
hope you are doing well with your cat - just to let you know Innova lite is not prescription - pet stores carry it
