Contacting Nat Grid to convert ...
Gas lines were recently extended down my street and I'd like to convert from oil. I've called National Grid a few times to find out information. Everytime, they take my contact info but never call me back.
Anyone know why it is so hard to convert?

I recently had a similar experience. I called and no one called me back!

I recently converted (I rent, so technically my landlord converted but I was in the middle of it). It was AWFUL trying to get in touch with National Grid to convert. It took my landlord over a year to actually begin the process.
Good luck! We are happier now that is all is done. We save a lot of money on heating

Re: Contacting Nat Grid to convert ...
Theres another thread on City Data about this..Per that thread:
Nat Grid they will run a gas line for free for the first 100 feet; after that, they will charge you $70 per foot to run a line from a main to your house. The crucial factor is distance so if you have a neighbor four houses away from you that has gas and the intervening three neighbors are heating with oil like you, then you will have to convince the three neighbors to convert at the same time.
This way the neighbor closest to the 4th guy gets a free run because he's within 100', then the second guy gets it for free and so on, until it gets to you. Thereafter, if the neighbor next to you down the line wants to convert, he gets the line for free from National Grid. Although the gas line to your house is free, you will, of course, still have to have a plumber install the boiler and run the gas lines inside your house....It will take a few months from start to finish.."

We were able to get in touch with someone via phone, but we're still waiting for some materials they said they are going to mail us about the conversion. We called over a month ago.

If you hire a contractor they can file all the paperwork with nat Grid to get it going.
