Continued ABA after Full Day at School?
Hi all,
My child who is 3, is about to enter a full day program at BCW- he's on the spectrum and has been receiving ABA and Speech at home services since last December.
I was wondering if anyone had continued to have your child receive ABA at-home after he/she has started a full day program at school? Have you gone through insurance or paid out of pocket?

Yes until my daughter was in 1st grade. Paid by the district. Mainly becaue she was not carrying over skills. She was doing a ton at home - reading, math, speaking and they were not seeing anything like that school. Goes into a much larger story lol but if the child needs services to continue at home the district should pay.

I think you have to fight your district for it. My SD would not give me any other services outside of what he was getting in school.

My district will not give me anything outside of the services DS received at school. However, I spoke with Ds's EI ABA therapist and a ABA teacher that did not give my son therapy and they all said the same thing- not all kids respond to ABA the same way and some (like DS) may not benefit from "too much" therapy.
DS did well and learned a lot but when he came home he needed time to "be himself" and unwind.
I should mention that speech was DS's biggest challenge at the time so we did try speech at home through insurance and paid the remainder out of pocket. It lasted 3 weeks before the speech therapist told us that he wasn't benefiting from it so we decided to stop. Best thing we did. He was crying through every session and tried to leave the room. I realized that he did all his "work" at school and wanted a break at home. For him- it was too much.
Maybe you should ask your DC's therapists if they feel additional therapy will help.

Agree with all this. Couldn't have it worded it any better. My son was receiving ABA at home and in a center (through EI). His home ABA therapist said the same thing, about all kids responding differently. We never really saw an improvement with it and she didn't believe he was benefitting from it.
Now he does not receive it. He gets OT, PT, and speech. All at school. But when he comes home, he is DONE. Cranky and tired so I try not to be so on top of him (he likes to rock on the couch to relax so I let him, stuff like that).
I would ask the school if they think he could benefit from additional therapy. Also, I know for my son, whatever was in school was covered but if decided to seek additional home therapy, that would have to go through insurance privately.

Re: Continued ABA after Full Day at School?
How bad is your specialist co pay? NYS law mandates that insurance companies cover 10 hours of additional aba at home. Your district will not cover it, or at least will give you a very hard time. However you insurance company must cover it (unless you are Medicaid...through some ridiculous loophole Medicaid does not have to cover ABA). However you would be subject to your specialist co pay. If is reasonable it may be worth it to give it a shot. My son gets aba after school 2 days a week and I think it's been very beneficial. Every kid is different though and more is not always better. Good luck :)

My daughter is also starting BCW! She gets ABA and speech at home but those services are ending. I am an ABA teacher and I know there are cases where the student receives services after school but I believe it depends on the needs of the child and what the district will approve.
