Re: Cookie Decorating
If you go to AC Moore you'll be able to find some of the Wilton icings. I used this for my Christmas cookies and it dried perfect, hard, like if the cookies were stacked they wouldn't get ruined hard..and it was still tastey. This would be good to use if you make thick sugar cookies, like if your roll the dough out to 1/2 thick and then cut them. Have you ever made these types of cookies before? There are all kinds of tips to getting them right...look around online for sugar cookie tips (for ex, dipping the cutter in flour before you cut the cookie, etc etc) The icing is called Wiltons Decorating Icing and they come in tubes. You can buy tips (round, star shaped, etc) that screw right on to the tubes. I tried making the royal icing myself once and it was a disaster...between getting the consistency exactly right, food coloring, and then having to put in it a pastry bag, and then having to use it quick before it got hard, then having to clean the pastry bags it was such a PITA (this is coming from someone who loves to bake and create things too!)
I think you saw my caterpillar cookies that I got for Charlie's party posted on Parenting. Just to give you an idea, those were about $3.25 (including tax) each. I got 55 for $178. So weigh the cost too, I don't know whats cheaper, buying all the ingredients, icings, the headache, etc or just having them done. I got them from cookiesbydesign. I went into their store in Commack with a picture I drew roughly in pencil and they pretty much duplicated it. It was exactly what I wanted!!
