Cooking Question...
If i'm going to make steak at home - in the broiler (from the butcher, not a grocery store)...
am I okay to make it medium rare - or is that a bacterial issue and i shouldn't???

You need to see what your practitioner says about this. My midwife says med rare is fine to eat.
Its actually funny but I was at the vet the other day with the dogs and my vet asked how I was eating my meat! He said because his wife would not eat anything less than med rare.
He said that if you are cooking beef that was previously frozen your chances of bacterial contamination are slim to none because when the beef breezes the pores "open up" that is why meat expands ehn frozen and it releases any bacterial spores found in the meat.
They would just defrost the meat and cook it how they like it.
I don't do it, If I'm even in teh mood for steak these days I'll eat it med-med rare...........
I just follow my midwifes suggestions. You should see what your practitioner recomends since tehre are no "set" guidlines and everyone will tell you different. If all else fails go with what your gut tells you to do!

Re: Cooking Question...
This is one of those "depends on who you ask" kinda questions. I think technically all meat is supposed to be cooked through, according to the American Pregnancy Assocation it should be no less than Medium (no pink)...but then again some people are more lax with the food restrictions so it depends on how you feel personally. Sorry, wish I had more concrete answer for you.

Re: Cooking Question...
thank you so much for the answers girls!!!
i won't be seeing my 'ob' until after 8 weeks - as we're currently with an RE.
i can't stand any red meat to be cooked longer than medium rare...and normally, when out - i ask for more rare than medium - so it would seem i'm 100% screwed!!!

You can ask your RE, they should answer any of your pregnancy questions for now. I don't have any answers... I don't eat red meat.

Even if you aren't seeing your OB you can give them a call about these types of questions. You can also call and see if they have a printed list or packet of their medication and food Do's and Don'ts that you should be abel to pick up before your apopintment!

OOOOOOOOO - good idea!!!
I just called the RE and asked for a list of medications and foods to avoid and she basically told me that they are the same for before TTC'ing. She's going to fax me something - but she said it's pretty basic.
I will call the OB in the morning - thank you for the suggestion!
