Cord Blood Registry
Are you going to do it? At first I was thinking "nah..." but I talked to two girls who just had kids and they said they did it (even though it's expensive and it's not something you ever want to use.......but imagine you needed it and you didn't do it?) that sold me.
We're going to do it.
Info, in case you dont know much about what I'm talking about:
Cord Blood Bank

Re: Cord Blood Registry
We're doing it. It is expensive, but I would feel destroyed if there was ever a need for it and we didn't do it. Plus, there is so much advancement that who knows how many more uses they will have for it in 10, 20, 30 years down the road.

Re: Cord Blood Registry
yep, we're doing it... mainly becuase there will only be more and more uses for it as time goes by, and you only get one chance to bank.
I strongly suggest to those who don't want to spend the $$$ to arrange to donate to a public bank... it's free and at least the cord blood will not be thrown out. you never know, you may even be able to retrieve your own sample if someone else didn't need it first.

Re: Cord Blood Registry
We are doing it. It was strongly suggested by my OB since DH is Asian and I am American. They say it is harder to find a match for mixed couples. I would also feel terrible knowing I had the opportunity to do it and didnt if something happened. Like PP said, there will be more and more uses for it down the road so I think its a good thing to do!

Re: Cord Blood Registry
nope, we have thought about it and may change in the future, but right now, we don't have the extra cash for it
Just FYI Wannabemom, I spoke to my doctor and there are currently no public banks in NY, just some in NJ, therefore you cannot donate to a public bank in the state of New York.

no way! and to think I normally take for granted that most things that are available in the US are available to the entire tri-state area since we're so densely populated... that's so unfortunate

Re: Cord Blood Registry
We are just starting to look into this.
I was speaking to my sister the other night about this (she's a doctor), but I wanted to know if they did this when my nephew was born last year. She said they wanted to, and had planned to, but you need to check with the company you use and the hospital you are delivering at. She delivered at NSUH on a Friday night and the office at the hospital that deals with the Cord Blood banking closes early on Friday and therefore she was unable to bank it.

, the hospital had nothing to do with our cord blood banking, my doctor got out what he could, DH called the carrier asap and they came and picked it up.

theoretically, no office or hospital staff needs to be involved. we're registered with CBR, and our instructions are that DH is to call a 1-800 number for the courier and tell them the hospital address and my hospital room #. the courier will come directly to us and pick up the sample within hours.
as for the collection part, at least in our case, we have to pay a fee to the OB prior to delivery for collection. so our Dr. will be doing it, not hospital staff.

I could have misunderstood what my sister told me, chances are I did since she talks a mile a minute. In either case, due to the day and the hour she gave birth, for whatever reason, something was closed at that time and they were unable to bank the baby's blood.

Re: Cord Blood Registry
I would like to do it but I think the cost is going to be too prohibitive - especially with two. I am going to look into some of the lesser-known companies to see if I can get a twin discount and to see if there is a payment plan.

One thought that may help you.... if you know your twins are identical for some reason, you only need to bank 1....
there usually are discounts for siblings and payment plans.. I presume there would be twin discounts too good luck!

Re: Cord Blood Registry
I did a ton of research on the whole cord blood banking and have opted not to do it with this baby.
I did offer to donate mine (I live in NJ) and they actually turned me down. Simiilar to what MrsRBK stated they only pick up on certain days and basically they completely talked us out of it. I figured it was their loss. Also my doctor only really works with Lifebank, otherwise he charges a fee as well even if you are just donating.

This is something that we would love to do. If no one minds sharing the info, can anyone tell me the cost?

We have not decided yet. At first we were totally for it, then after hearing that there is a lot of donated cord blood, our options have re-opened.

We will do it. I know it's expensive but you never know.
Also my mom is a L&D nurse and she said they have a public bank and that if I deliver there I could bank for free, but would probably use someone's elses cord blood if it were needed. The bronx is too far for me and I think its best I save the Cord blood just for our family.

Re: Cord Blood Registry
I am doing it b/c I work with very sick children and I realize that this can happen to anyone unexpectedly. I like to think of it this way it is an insurance policy I mean you have car insurance regardless if you it isn't your children more important than a car??? That is just my opinion I am using cryo cell it seems to be a little less expensive than the others I couldn't really afford it but whatever little chance we can have the better...
