Cost of Birthday Party
I have been calling around to a few places and I am quite frankly shocked at how much they cost.
I have called a few local places, a gym, candy party place and farm and have been told prices between $400-$600!
Maybe it's just sticker shock. What are your opinions?

Re: Cost of Birthday Party
I think kids birthday parties are totally ridiculous these days. Just like everything there is competition to be the best and have the best party which translates into hundreds of dollars.
I'm probably in the minority, but my kids will be having friends over at the house for some good old fashioned games, cake and party favors.

To be honest...its exactly what I expected. Not that its right bc I agree "HOLY TOO MUCH" but I totally am not surprised. Where have you been looking? sorry I just saw where you looked. What about a house party?

Movie theatres are also bargains! You only have to pay for the kids, bring bagels & do a morning thing.
Also Chuck E. Cheese is very inexpensive - and the kids love it.

A friend just booked her DD's party there for March. I guess I will check it out for next year.

Pizza party. Kids love it and it's cheap. Some places allow the kids to make their own.

DD is turning 3 and is not enrolled in school so I can totally get away w/ a house party this year. I was actually planning to have a house party and was considering hiring a clown to come. When I called two clown places for pricing they said it was $175 an hour, which I expected, but I thought I would shop around and see if it was actually cheaper to have it out. I honestly thought DD's gym place would be around $200-$250 NOT $400+
When all is said and done I will still end up spending over $400 for the house party when you include the clown, food, decorations, favors, cake and other entertainment. I guess I was just experiencing sticker shock when I called around.

Re: Cost of Birthday Party
It really is outrageous. But, I have to admit, I love doing it! My boys' parties are in July and August and I'm planning them now.
ETA: I love how my 3 1/2 year old is involved in choosing the place where we have it. He's really excited.

Re: Cost of Birthday Party
I've done some of my kids parties at home and then we've had one at Chuck E. Cheese, at a community house (with a puppet show) and recently we did my DDs bday party at Creative Play (similar to Gymboree) it cost us over $400 for that party... but let me tell you it was worth every $$ especially being that I was 8 months preggo at the time... I didn't have to clean the house before or after, I didn't have to worry about activities for the kids or what they were going to eat... It was done for me! and the kids had a great time... I LOVED IT! We are doing my DSs party at SaftSwim too this year, being that the baby will be so little and my son is soo soo excited about it.

Re: Cost of Birthday Party
We had Andrew's 2nd at MY GYM and paid $295 for 20 kids. I did a morning session (10:30-noon) so I have bagels and coffee and juice. Much cheaper than pizza.
THis year I have his 3rd and Lauren's 1st I have no idea. I have not started planning yet.

I am going to look into that next year for Sydney's 2nd. I would rather have it at a place but dont want to spend alot. Her first was an at home party for around $100.

Movie theaters are expensive IMO. I guess it depends on which you go to. The Island 16 in holtsville is $17 or $18 per kid last time I looked into it.
CEC is not inexpensive either. We spent about $400 on a party there for my son when he was 4.
Honestly, the only place that was a deal was McDonald's Playplace at $7.00 per child.

Re: Cost of Birthday Party
When all was said and done we probably spent about $1K on DD's 1st birthday and we had it at home. It would have been closer to $500 but we had to rent a tent and heater at the last minute.
