Cost of owning a cat?

I would love a dog but we aren't allowed to have one. So we're thinking about getting a cat. Out of curiosity, what does it cost you guys a month on cat stuff? What do you buy for your cat? I've never had a cat before but I'm aware of dog prices, but those vary too because 2 german shepards cost a wee bit more to feed than a 15 pound mutt. But a 15 pound mutt looks so cute in diamond collars and faux fur jackets!

I would say that our cat cost about $20 to $25 a month. That doesn't include yearly checkups and/or startup expenses (litterbox, bowls, scratching post) but does count a few toys here and there.
Litter is about $10 and a 16 or20lb. box usually lasts a month. Food is about $7 for a 3.5 lb. bag and last a few weeks.

Lets see....we have 3 cats right now.

Basically their cost is food...which runs me about $6-$7 a week. I buy the Purina special care kind. Thats for 3 cats too.

Ya gotta buy bowls for feeding, I buy ours cheap, I replace them a lot...

a litter box and litter.

I again ahve 3 cats, buy about $10 worth of litter a week.

So for 3 cats , I'd say on average $15 a week in litter and food.

Our cats had their shots etc when they were younger, we have only had to take 2 of them to the vet once each. Once my girl had a bladder infection..with meds, blood work etc, was about $175, and for the other for some eating issues was just a $40 office visit.

Overall I would say the cost is pretty cheap.

I don't know the numbers but they are pretty affordable. We buy litter, dry and canned food in bulk and that saves us a lot of money. Plus it's nice to go once a month (or less) and have all the supplies.

I have two cats and buy their litter at costco for less than $10. I change it once a week and the huge bag lasts a month.

I buy the Purina dry food for $11 a bag - that lasts 2 weeks and the friskies wet food at about $6 for 12 (they each get half a pouch so that lasts just under 2 weeks).

I had one guy at the vet a lot (the moggy) and he has cost me so much more than the pedigree, but in Vet's bills for a year with shots and infrequent visits, I think I spent under $300 last year.

If you get a pure-breed like a persian or some other longhaired breed they may need grooming which is about $70 a visit.

Don't forget about vet care. If you adopt a cat,
please remember that the cat might get sick
and need vet care. That could be very expensive.

ownign a cat is hella cheap. its just the vet bills that rack up.
luckily, if they stay healthy all you really have to pay for is the spay/nueter and shots for teh most part.

but aside form all that its not expensive at all.

i buy the huge bags of litter and food and they keep me stocked for a pretty long time. my cat costs me nothing-----its the dogs that all my money goes to.

i agree with the rest of the posters, my two cats are pretty inexpensive, even though they eat special food. Wet and dry food, plus litter runs me about $60 a month.

Yearly check ups are about $100 each.

One of my cats needed some testing done for a kidney issue, that cost us about $750.

All that being said- they are worth every penny!

cats are definitely cheaper than dogs. and independent as well
