Cough medicine - really upset with my ped
So miki has had a terrible cough the past few days so I had DH take her to the ped yesterday to check her lungs
the ped said her lungs were clear BUT prescribed her some cough meds (now, I know some doctors do not prescribe cough meds for children under 4 but I know there are some that are safe if given in the proper dosage)
well, i brought the script to the pharmacy and they refused to fill it until they called the ped. After this, I went online and looked up the meds he prescribed. It is CONTRAINDICATED for children under 6 and this is part of what the article said
FDA is issuing this public health advisory to alert patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals to important information on the safe and appropriate use of Tussionex Pennkinetic Extended-Release Suspension. Tussionex is a prescription cough medicine containing hydrocodone and the antihistamine, chlorpheniramine that is made to be given every 12 hours (“extended-release”). Hydrocodone, the narcotic ingredient in this medicine that controls cough, can cause life-threatening breathing problems and death when given above or more frequently than the recommended dose. Tussionex should not be used in children less than 6 years old.
FDA is highlighting the following important information on the safe use of Tussionex:
Do not give to children less than 6 years old. FDA has received reports of death due to respiratory depression with use of Tussionex in patients less than 6 years old.
UM, yeah, I think we will just take our chances with the coufgh or give her the homeopathic cough syrup that we have at home
I am so ******, why the hell would he prescribe this to her???????????

just left a message. I told the receptionist that I need to speak directly to him and she said "I will send this to triage and we will see if that is possible" ...
um, so I may not be able to speak to my child's doctor directly??????? Oh, I am steaming mad.....

Good for you, keep demanding that he speak to you and keep us posted.
You have every right to be livid...I would be too.  And yes, good catch by the pharmacist.

OMG...I would be furious!
My ped. did say you can give children under 4 over the counter cough medicine (although he doesnt give it to his own daughter) as long as you are vigilant and do not give more than prescribed. For Miki's age, it would be 1/2 the dose recommended on the back of the box. When TJ had a bad cough, I asked the pharmacist and she said exactly the same. She recommended mucinex OTC...1/2 the dose for a 4 yr. old.

ITA! If I were you i would call the nurse's line and state that you are very upset that the Dr prescribed medicine that is contraindicated for your child acording to labeling instructions and you would like to speak with him within 24 hrs or you will be handling it through other avenues-I'm a b!tch

Yeah, I will be calling back with my b!tch face on if I do not hear from him
I like the ped alot but really, it says that it can cause respitatory distress in children under 6... *****

I am going to wait to speak to him but I am definitely considering changing doctors.

I would change peds if my gave a contraindicated medication b/c I would worry that it would not be an isolated incident and it could happen again and might not be caught in time.

I would not utilize a practice that would employ a sub-standard physician....I would loose confidence in the practice and seek a more competent physician. Harsh? Possibly but these mistakes should not happen.
