Counting down to Christmas - Advent Calendars and little elf anyone?

We bought a nativity scene advent calendar last year and it's cute, but I really like the Christmas tree advent calendars and think I'll buy one this year for DS.

Also, I want to start the tradition of the little elf to look for each day in December as you count down to Christmas. I think I'm getting him the Christopher Pop In Kins instead of Elf on a Shelf, only because it's cuter, lol. Anyone else doing these things? I'll post some pics of the advent calendars I've found and liked and the elf options.

I have a Nativity advent calendar. I am also going to start the advent wreath made out of construction paper this year too LOL

I just bought Elf on a Shelf, can't wait to put it out - waiting until the day after Thanksgiving! I am still trying to think of a name for him!

I am getting one of the elves this year (haven't decided which one yet which means I'll probably end up with both Chat Icon). I do want to get an advent calendar too but haven't found anything yet.

Just bought the elf on the shelf. I already told DS that an elf is coming to live with us and that he's on his way from the north pole.

We have an elf, but it's a cute homemade elf I bought from someone that makes them. He has velcro hands, so he can attach to just about everything. He comes in early December each year. He doesn't just sit on a shelf though. He gets into things....last year he made a zip line from the top of the Christmas tree to the front door....got into the baking supplies, camped out in a doll tent (which was a little treat he left), toilet papered the bedrooms, left little treats and goodies, etc. The kids get a kick out of it and are sad to see him leave on Christmas eve.

This one is from One Step Ahead. I like this one because it's not about giving 25 little gifts; the pockets are prefilled with decorations that you "hang" (velcro) on the tree as you count down the days.

This one is super cute from Lillian Vernon. But you have to fill the pockets yourself with little treats/gifts/notes etc.

This one is very similar, but I think it's bigger and it's from Pottery Barn Kids

For the elfs, there's two that I know of:

Christopher Pop In Kins

Elf on a Shelf

That's really cute! I would love to do this when DS is older and would "get" it!

I just wanted to add that you don't need a commercialized elf with a book, you can easily find an elf at a craft fair, Homegoods, etc. that will work.

Our elf came in the mail addressed to the children with some goodies in it along with a note explaining his purpose. You can make the note yourself on the computer. There are a lot of examples online.

Re: Counting down to Christmas - Advent Calendars and little elfs anyone?

My sister bought the girls Elf on a Shelf so prob after Thanksgiving we'll start putting him out.

We always had advent calendars growing up so I want to get my girls one this year now that Kaydyn can understand it. Fisher Price had a cute one that is reusable. I might look into getting that one.

I hadn't thought about this before, but good idea! Very true. I might look on Etsy for some little elves... I do like that yours has velcro hands - gives the option of hanging from things, etc.

Are the Christopher Pop In Kins and Elf on a Shelf knitted elves? I wonder how big they are and what size would be good.

Re: Counting down to Christmas - Advent Calendars and little elfs anyone?

I just ordered the christmas tree advent calendar from PB Kids. I want to do Christopher Popinkins too (same reason- he's cuter Chat Icon) but i'm not sure DD will "get it" yet. I guess I can just use it as kind of a hide and seek game for now.

ETA: After reading the other responses I signed into etsy to look at elves- some of them are creepy, alot are more $$ than the elf on a shelf and christopher

Here are a few cute options:

Same price as elf on a shelf
