Covered In Rash-Reaction to Amoxicillin

So, after the GTG, Taylor and I did some shopping. When I went took her out of the car when we got home, I noticed that she had a rash on her calf.
Well, when I got her up this morning, she had a rash from head to toe!
No fever or anything else that would make me think something was wrong, and thank God Huntington Medical Group is open every day. I took her to see the doctor and he determined that it was a reaction to the amoxicillin she has been on for her ear infection.
The only thing I don't understand is that she has been on it since last Saturday....

So, for anyone that was at the GTG, dont worry, it is definitely nothing that is contagiousChat Icon

Re: Covered In Rash-Reaction to Amoxicillin

I have an akkergy to amoxicillin too...and when I was little, it was the same way they diagnosed me- a delayed rash. Ironically, my dd was on amoxicillin (and i asked dr about possibility of dd being allegic and he said there is no way...) a few weeks ago, then went off and a week later, got a rash....we went to the dr twice, the day i spotted it ( a saturday) and they diagnosed it as "heat rash"...two days later at daycare they sent her home saying they thought it was fifth's disease or coxackie (sorry sp?) and dr reconfirmed it was due to heat....I raised my concerned about a delayed reaction again at the second appt and was told it was too long since she had stopped....but reading this, now I think I am right still......

Re: Covered In Rash-Reaction to Amoxicillin

This happened to me while I was pregnant with my daughter. I had been on the medication for 5 days before my rash broke out and it got worse and worse over next 3 days, when I wasn't taking the medication any more, before it started getting better. And the funny thing is that I had been on amoxicillin before with no side effects.

An allergic reaction can take a while to show bc everyday that you take it the amount builds and builds... a word of advice if you are allergic to amoxicillin there is a good chance that there is also an allergy to anything in the cef family----that reaction landed me in the er during hs! Some how the two are related! Good luck!

Re: Covered In Rash-Reaction to Amoxicillin

She looks much better today. The rash is definitely fading.
The wierd thing is that yesterday, after she got up from her nap, I went into her room and her head was soaking wet and on her knee the rash had turned into a water blister. As soon as she bent her knee, the water came out of it. No other symptoms and she is doing well today.
DH told the ped when he put her on amoxicillin that he has always had an allergy to penicillin (sp?) and he told DH that it would be unlikely she is allergic to it as well.
