CPSE Meeting Tomorrow - Would like to push for ABA home services - BTDT Advice Greatly Appreciated!
Just got off with the school and they too are torn between a self contained 12:1:1 (no ABA) and a 8:1:2 (ABA 1 hr a day), however, they are leaning towards the 12. DS' social skills are starting to emerge and the 12 would provide him with much better models. DS' has some really great skills, which have all been obtained through ABA however his ability to generalize is still lacking. His attending is very poor. His language is starting to emerge but it is still largely not spontaneous. They will be recommending him for speach/language, OT and PT (all through the school). I lean towards the 12 but I am concerned that he is going to get lost with his poor attending and am concerned about him losing ABA (he is getting 18 hours a week now). My ideal would be the 12 with ABA at home. However, I have already been told that they "just do not do that." I know that they DO its just a matter of fighting for it. I need some buzz words and persuasive arguments to get them. Any help is greatly appreciated. We are in Middle Country SD if it makes a difference.

BY far the MOST important word is: REGRESSION. When a child regresses they have no leg to stand on. I know the meeting is tomorrow but if you have any data from school that would be helpful. Otherwise maybe the teacher can explain when breaks occur that regression takes place. GL, let us know how it goes.

You may want to state how since "generalization" is difficult for him, you would like services to occur in the home as well. Having your ds be able to play with his toys in the home (preschool IEPs for Special Ed are geared towards play) and be able to request things in the home, communicate with family members etc is very important. Having a SEIT in the home, could really push him further.
If you have a provider that will stay on and is excellent, you can state how you don't want to lose "so and so' because he has made so much progress with her.
They will keep telling you what they are offering, and you can keep telling them what will benefit your ds the most. Also mention that you know other school districts that provide both school and home services.
Good luck !!! I hope your committee is cooperative !!! And you get everything your little boy deserves !

I think you will have a hard time getting the combination of the 12 with ABA at home. I think that tyoically, if you are saying he needs ABA at home, they will want to know why you want to pull him from the ABA class at school.
You know your kid better than anyone. I think if you feel you still need the ABA at home, it might be worth it to keep him in the ABA class at school. If you think he can handle the 12, I would ask for the 12, with a 1:1 aide and ask for Parent Training twice a week to help you at home. For me, I would be willing to give up the home services in order to get him into a class with higher functioning kids if I thought he was ready for it.
Good luck!

Is your child going full day or part day?
Does your child regress while on school breaks without the ABA? If so, you could bring that point up.

Just FYI - You don't get services during school breaks with CPSE. They follow the school calendar.
I would say you need carryover from school to home. Say your child doesn't bring home what he learns during the day at school to general living at home and they need to bridge the gap. We actually did this the opposite way. She was doing a ton at home and not at at school so they gave home services to help her repeat the activities at school. Worked great for us.
Good luck! : )

Yes, I know. My point was that if he is regressing over school breaks without the ABA, that is a case for continuation with the ABA for the new year, because he will regress without it.

How did it go?
Thanks for asking
I could tell right off the bat that I wasnt going to get home services (and since I had particular concerns about DS getting Speech, I decided not to make an issue of it). In the end I was pleased with how things went. We put him in the 8 and if we find he really doesnt need the ABA and would be better off in the 12, we will switch him. He will get PT, OT and individual speech and we got parent training. And the budget passed
P.S. I was very happy with the representative from NIS

My son went to NIS and was in a 12:1:1. It's a great school.
