Craigslist Question....LONG...Sorry. UPDATE at bottom..It was a scam

I am selling my wedding gown on there, and somebody said they wanted it. FINE, but it seems as far as pick up goes I will be dealing with a third party. I am trying to see if it can be a cash transaction, if not then I don't think I will sell the gown. I have heard of scams about checks from there and I just don't want to get burned and lose my wedding gown in the process. Has anyone sold anything on Craigs list and if so was it a smooth transaction? Am I just being a worry wart or exaggerating? I just need some piece of mind here. I have reserved feelings about handing a wedding gown over to some stranger and possibly getting a bad check or something false. Becuase then I am out of a sale where I could have made money (money that I could definitely use) and the product in which to make the money. I just don't want to get scammed is all. Let me know your experiences. Sorry so long Chat Icon THANKS!!!!!

Re: Craigslist Question....LONG...Sorry.

I have bought and sold many items on craigslist and they have all been cash only and pick up in person.

I would not get involved with shipping to anyone on craigslists without having full cash payment first.

I would recommend selling the dress on ebay if you want to get payment via paypal and ship the dress to the auction winner.

Re: Craigslist Question....LONG...Sorry.

I'd be wary - I know that the 3rd party pick up is a very common scam for some reason. Also when a person is overly eager to have it without really expecting to check it out thoroughly and is very trusting of you - too trusting in their dialogue. If you get cash in hand, I guess its fine but dont take anything but cash.

Re: Craigslist Question....LONG...Sorry.

did you get an email response that sounded like it was a foreigner typing (Wrong grammar , etc.?)
someone posted about this, and it happened to me and my friend, they ask for the package to be boxed and ready for pickup, etc. all this complicated stuff, in this foreigner wrong grammar talk trying to sound polite.
neither of us even responded to the email.
have you spoken to the person? what other details can you tell us ?

Re: Craigslist Question....LONG...Sorry.

It was a scam. The guy emailed me this morning and all kinds of red flags popped up from his message. First off, not local, second very foriegn sounding, grammar, spelling mistakes, everything you could imagine....BAD. Everything they warn you about on Craigs list. Turns out he is from canada...not really foriegn..but not local. I also emailed him back last night before I realized it was a scam but had my doubts (always go with your gut) and told him only cash payments and local pick up. He emailed this morning a offered me lots of money which I was supposed to go cash this check and wire money to some other person***. Excuse me but I am not a complete idiot, i do my home work before I get really invovled with these things. I called my local authorities and reported the guy to craigslist. I guess I learned my lesson here. Thanks for the advice ladies, I am glad I realized it was a scam before I was out all kinds of money I really don't have right now. I am just grateful I was able to do a search here and just type in craigs list and found enough info to make me say okay this is not right. Thank you for LIF!!!!!

***Just a footnote...the guy was going to give me $2850 for a dress I was selling for $250. MAJOR RED FLAG......just becareful when you do these unsecure selling websites. It ebay for me from now on.....paypal is my friend that's for sure.

Thank goodness you caught onto his scam before it was too late. Can you report him to anyone at Craigslist?
