Craigslist.org - Selling vs. adoption
I would like to know how I can differentiate between someone offering adoption or selling?
I recently contacted someone in regards to adoption and their fee was $500 - is that not selling?
Thanks in advance to those who respond.

Re: Craigslist.org - Selling vs. adoption
I don't think I would use craigslist unless I had a way to check up on the people and their reputation. Some peple act like they just have one puppy or one litter, but they are really in the business full time. There are legitimate expenses with having a litter and it is fine for someone to try to recoup those expenses. But yeah, $500 sounds like a sale price, not an adoption fee.

hmmm...I came across a few on petfinder(that were shelters, I believe) and they were asking $400 for adoption fees.

Re: Craigslist.org - Selling vs. adoption
I would avoid Craigslist for a pet. Good luck!

Thanks in advance to those who respond. Who was the adoption agency/charity? If it was a private seller then I would be weary

As long as it is a charity org that has real expenses for rescuing their animals then they are legit. If it is an individual trying to recover some fees then it is usually a BYB or an ameteur breeder trying to make some $$.

Re: Craigslist.org - Selling vs. adoption
There was a post for a 4 Y/O Yorkie for adoption - I contacted the person and they told me it would be $500 since she paid over $1.5K....it sounded like selling to me than adopting, so I flagged the post.

Did you check petfinders.com for a yorkie? Last time I looked they had quite a few

I did - but we're looking for an adult dog and they go so quickly! Plus, a lot are out of our travel range!

Try puppymillrescue.org. They have a lot of yorkies as well, and they have their own transporters to help get a dog to you.

Re: Craigslist.org - Selling vs. adoption
I can see paying money to an organization since they will use it to help more animals but there are so many people that need to find new homes for their pet and charge and adoption fee. It is sickening.

It is sickening. Just a side note here. ALOT of people charge a small adoption fee for smaller dogs, especially in the city because they are afraid that if they list them as "free" they will end up as bait in a dog fighting ring But $500 is not the norm for this type of situation. It is usually nominal.
