Crate training a puppy...is this specific scenario cruel, IYO?
I'm crate training..it's going well, but is this scenario cruel?
She will be home alone 2 or 3 times a week for 7.5 hours. She would be in her crate.
Is this considered cruel or the norm when you are crate training?
I didn't think it'd be so bad, since at night she sleeps in her crate until the morning, when she goes outside.
Rest assured I will and do give her lots of attention and long walks outside, but a relative says this is cruel to do.
Honesty appreciated.
I know I have a lot to learn in this puppy process and am open.

That's a long stretch tbh. 4-5 hours is about the max for a puppy -- Until she's fully potty trained can you hire a dog walker to come visit about midway through that stretch so she gets to go out and eliminate? It would only be temporary and will improve your training effort!

Oh i meant to mention, this is a TERRIFIC Yahoo group I joined when my Sophie was a baby, great resource, and they can send you an email with every new post, OR a daily index of the questions that folks submit - with thorough, constructive suggestions.

How old is the puppy? Is she getting let out at least once? That's seems like a long time to hold it for a puppy, but some can do it. Do you let the puppy run around before she's crated? Give her some exercised before so she's tired.
My dog was in a crate from 7-4 but let out once for about 45 minutes during the day. She did fine.
Using the crate seems cruel to us but it's really not. It's not hurting them in any way.
ETA: My dog was over a year old when she was left that long.

she is 3 months old. I am looking into a dog walker.
She has lots of time to play and run around before being in crate.

I think its a little long for a 3 month old puppy just thinking of their bladders but if your pup is doing well then it should be okay.

Shammy was crated from 6:30 to 3 and during the day DH would come home for a while in between to let him our for a while. The only thing is.. AS SOON as you let him out of the crate you need to bring him outside right away. Otherwise you will have an accident.
Shammy was fine!

It is a little long for a 3 month old...but if your puppy is potty training well, its a possibility.
I don't think its cruel... it may be tough on you and the pup for a while, but sometimes (when its a necessity) it has to be.
It would be ideal if you could have a dog walker come in for a few months until the pup is a bit older..

We had a dogwalker for long days like that, but if that wasn't possible we kept the puppy in an area that had a "mess" area if she needed to go (not her crate, covered the floor with tarp and used a dog gate to pen her in). Dogs don't want to go in their crate but if they're confined too long she may get a UTI or have to relieve herself anyway. 
But it's a good sign your puppy can make it through the night!

The rule of thumb most trainers recommend is one hour for each month of age with 8 hours being the max.

Agreed. If this is how it has to be, then that's how it has to be. Unfortunately, there might be some accidents until your pup can control his bladder better but I think it's FAR from cruel. If you could get someone to come in around lunchtime just to let him use that bathroom, that would be ideal, but unfortunately we can't all swing that, I know I couldn't.
ETA: I do think you may want to gate him in the kitchen or something like that until he's a little older. Like a pp mentioned, they really don't like to go in their crate but he might not be able to hold it and you don't want him to get comfortable going in there either, KWIM?

Too long of a stretch for a pup for sure. At least half of that....hrs that they can hold is the same as months old. So 4 mths old, no more than 4 hrs, 5 mths no more than 5 hrs and so on (general rule of thumb). Plus they need activity, as they have a lot of energy and wont want to sleep all that time. So IMO (only using your word) I personally find it a bit cruel and just too long for such a yojng dog.
Def have to find another solution b/c it's just too long for a baby dog to hold the urine and to be without a bit of activity. They have loads of energy and will need a break from such a small space.

I know a lot of people say it's too long, but I have left our puppy in there for that length of time with no issues. As another poster said, if the puppy can hold it then you are fine. I found that if I put her in her crate she would hold it but if I left her out in a gated area for even half that time she would go on the floor.
We started her with the crate when we got her and I was coming home for lunch for the first couple of months. By the time she was 5 months old, we were leaving her for 8 hours a few days a week.
