*CRAZY WEEK! (long)
Sorry to "come out and run" - but after coming out on Monday... it's been INSANE.
Steve, my DH, was having severe stomach pains on Tuesday and actually asked me to take him to the doctor (which is very unusual! he's actually broken his nose before and pulled the whole 'i'm fine' thing). So our doctor sent us to urgent care because they couldn't get us in for an appointment. They hooked him up on an IV and started giving him fluids because he was dehydrated from not eating and vomiting throughout the day. He got an xray while he was there that showed a buildup of waste in his intestines. They ended up sending us home about 3 hours later because after pain meds and fluids, Steve was feeling better - but said that if the pain returned, to head straight to the ER.
WELL, the pain returned.
So, off to the ER we went around 8:30 pm. We were there for a ridiculous amount of time (maybe 4-5 hours) before they even gave him fluids (despite him throwing up like 7 times in the waiting room). Around 1:00 he finally got a scan of his stomach done and after waiting another hour for results, we found out that he has a small bowel obstruction.
(Back story - 2 years ago he was riding his bicycle and was in a near-fatal accident when he was hit by an SUV. He ended up needing 40 staples across his stomach among many other things.. )
So it turns out that any time you have abdominal surgery, you're at risk for developing scar tissue in your intestines which can cause adhesions and obstructions. So this is what he had.
They put a nasogastric tube in (which was a HORRIBLE experience because the lovely nurse used lubricating jelly instead of Lidocaine [sp?] - meaning he felt EVERYTHING!) - so basically it was a tube that went down his nose, into his stomach and was attached to a machine on the wall that was suctioning out any excess fluids/waste that couldn't go down. They were hoping this would relieve the pressure and obstruction.
They did that until Thursday morning when he had another xray to see if things were improving. I went to work that morning (tomorrow's my last day, so it's been a crazy time for me - I work as an SLP in a school) and then had a feeling that I should go to the hospital instead. As soon as I got there, they were rolling him down for emergency surgery.
He had surgery to remove the multiple adhesions in his intestines and they also removed his appendix (so hopefully he'll NEVER need another abdominal surgery!) and he spent the next few days recooperating in the hospital.
My poor hubbie just got home yesterday - so it's been a crazy week! He begged me to go to my first OB appointment on Thursday afternoon - so I did. Little Meatball is doing great and looked like he (I always say he even though we dont' know the gender) was moving all around!
I already have my next 2 appointments scheduled - one on July 17th and we'll find out the gender on July 28th!
We also had to cancel our trip to Rome (sort of our babymoon) which Steve is SO upset about.. but his health comes first and we need him to be fully recovered! We also had to push back (by one week) our trip to NY...
If you got this far, thanks for listening! It has been SO hectic and poor Meatball was getting nothing but hospital salads and burger king for meals
But luckily, Steve is home... doing better and my mom is there taking care of him

Oh my gosh Hayley! I'm so sorry!! Poor Steve has been through too much and I'm sure it wasn't easy on you either! I was wondering where you were- I was expecting LOTS of posts from you and hadn't seen any. I was hoping you went away or something- never expected something wrong! I'm glad he's recovering and that meatball is doing great!

holycrap Hayley!!! I'm really happy to hear Steve is doing better, but DANG that is crazy!!! Major hugs for him and you, and I know how much you were looking forward to your Rome trip - but you're right, his health comes first and everything happens for a reason so maybe you weren't meant to go at this time!
YAY for Meatball doing well!!!!!!!
