Credit repair - Is there a way we can remove information from our credit report...
Even if it is TRUE??
I have an old credit card from college with a derogatory payment history dating back to 01'. Is there a way I can call to have this information removed from my report? This account has been closed for quite some time now.

There are people that do this for a living. They charge a lot but are totally worth it.

it is supposed to drop off.. Is it on all three of the reports or just one? If its on just one, call or write a letter to that company telling them to take it off.

if it was from 01, i would just wait it out a bit...after 7 years it drops off and you are getting close to that. Unless it is going to affect you getting a house or something equally important to you, right now...than I would pay for help

Most are scams and if it is removed, it's only for a brief period of time... and you can get in trouble for it.
There ARE people who negotiate with debtors to work out a way to get the negative stuff off the credit history, but that's usually what they ask for in agreement to pay the debt. If the account is already closed, there is no bargaining with them.
It will come off after 7 years, so I'd wait it out.
If you request a copy of your report directly from the credit agency, the report will state when things will be removed from your report.

The debt isn't old enough to be removed if true. Must wait 7 years.
Here is a link to info that might help.

if you are applying for something- like a mortgage- you can dispute it- which will remove it from your report temporialy - while the research it- 9 times out of 10 they don't have the info to back it up

I believe that 7 year rule only applies IF you actually paid the debt. I had a Sears card in 1991.. yes almost 20 years ago. It was STILL showing up as a bad debt until last year because I never took care of it.

This is of course true. It's removed 7 years after the problem no longer exists.
If you continue to not pay the debt, it won't just disappear from your credit report!

Go to creditboards.com. They have a ton of information and explain how to do this.
The 7 year rule applies whether you paid the debt or not.

Just dispute it with the CRA and chances are they will delete it. I had some baddies on mine from my previous marriage and disputed them as "no knowledge of this account" and they were all removed. Now I have only good things.
I second creditboards, it's a great site.

I would start with calling the credit card company directly if they still exist to ask them to remove the information from the credit report, assuming that you rectified any late payments and settled your debt. Seven years is the standard amount of time that derrogatory information stays on your credit report.
