Re: crib mattress ?
We measured the exact crib dimensions, and bought a firm mattress that fit the crib as close as possible. Yes, crib mattresses are "standard", but if you read the tags, the dimensions sometimes vary by an inch or two. A smaller mattress leaves a little gap, which I didn't want.
I didn't worry about the brand, really. It's only for a few years, until they move to a twin bed. Plus, they are so light, I don't think spring support will be a major issue.

Re: crib mattress ?
We got the Simmons Sleep n More. It fits our crib tightly (Delta Luv Jenny Lind style) and there is no gaps on the side. We have several different brands of sheets and they all fit on it perfectly too.
I'm extremely happy with its performance so far. I have a couple of friends who complained that their mattresses have sunk but ours still looks and feels brand new.
