Crib or big boy furniture?

So DH and I thought we had decided to keep DS in his crib for now. DD has my old dresser, we just need to get her a crib and a changing table.

But then DH told me that his mom has basically been begging him Chat Icon to buy DS's big boy furniture... they said if we want to get him a bed (not sure if they would want to buy any other furniture, he doesn't really need it though) they want to pay for it. So sweet right? Chat Icon

If we get DS a bed, DD will get his crib, and we will get her a low dresser that has room for a changing pad on top. So that is one less item we will have to buy for DD.

But if we get DS a bed... he'll be in a bed Chat Icon He sleeps on a cot at daycare and he climbs off the couch so I know he'll do the same thing in a bed. Which is fine - we'll just move some toys into his bedroom to keep him occupied if he wakes up early... but is 16/17 months really old enough for a bed? (We would have to do it before he is 18 months because that is when DD is due).

Sorry this got so long... WWYD?

If I were in your situation I'd probably go with the big boy bed. Although I can't possibly imagine Ryan in a bed. I think he'd play more than he'd sleep. Chat Icon

I was also just thinking can't you put those rail thingy's up on the sides of the bed so he can't climb/fall out? Do they exist? I remember having them when I was a kid lol

I would definitely get those for him - but I think he could still climb out at the end of the bed. Or stand up and fall over them Chat Icon

Can you tell I'm becoming a paranoid mommy? Chat Icon

Re: Crib or big boy furniture?

I just posted that we moved DD to a bed yesterday.

We were going through the same struggle-DD was doing well in the crib and it was nice being able to keep her "contained". However, if we kept her in the crib, DS would go in a bassinet/pack n play for a few months since we didn't want to buy another crib.

We bit the bullet and tried moving her last night. It worked, for one night at least.

DD is 27 months, so quite a bit older than your guy, but I know some others on the board have moved them a lot sooner and with great success (I think I remember ABCIverson posting about this).

We put them on DD's bed and I have the same concern-that she stands up (like she is used to doing in her crib) and falls over them onto the floor since they only go as high as her thighs. Didn't happen last night, hope it won't happen in the futureChat Icon .

I would keep him in his crib and wait it out for a few months. If you don't think he is ready I would not push it.

If you don't want to buy a 2nd crib you could use a bassinet/pack n play for your DD for the 1st 3 months your DS will be more like 20-21 months when you try to transition him.

Also IMO, if you were to do this I would do it soon, not when the baby comes. You don't want him to feel like he is his booted out of his comfort zone because of his sister's arrival.

We do plan on having DD in the PNP bassinet at first so that's taken care of. I was also worried about making all those transitions right before the baby came...

I think we'll keep him in the crib for now and hope that my ILs are still feeling generous next year Chat Icon

Re: Crib or big boy furniture?

i would get another crib.

DS is 16 months and is getting a Chat Icon tomorrow. we had to buy another crib because there was NO WAY i would let him in a bed overnight. could he get on and off it? probably off but he's too little to get on. also i don't want him able to roam the house at night or even his bedroom--too many opportunities to get into trouble and get hurt.
