Re: Cribs/Furniture
I have to decide soon. I picked a set, then changed my mind, now I may go back to it.
I would get a new crib- I would feel more comfortable safety wise.
Maybe your mom could use the old crib for when she watches your DC?
I would ask the ped. about that though...
Check out this link regarding safety of older cribs:

Re: Cribs/Furniture
Personally, I would not use the crib from 1982-there were massive recalls and a crib that is almost 28 years old could be very unsafe.
We registered for our crib at BBB. We got the Westwood Brookline crib.

Re: Cribs/Furniture
We ordered ours a few weeks ago. I am 27 weeks, so maybe around 22-23 weeks. We didn't register for it, because we got it at Behrs ad registered at BBB.
I would not use your crib from when you were a baby. Safety standards have changed significantly since then! It's probably a drop-side crib and they don't even make those anymore and they've all been recalled.

Re: Cribs/Furniture
Some time in the mid to late 80's they changed the safety regulations of cribs. I would personally NOT use your old crib from when you were a child, nor would I let your mom use it at her home for your DC.
We ordered our crib from JCPenney. They have a good reputation for baby furniture and there are a lot of reviews from real people for most items. They seem to frequently have free shipping also (which can save a LOT) and they currently have a sale going on too.

Re: Cribs/Furniture
We went to Behr's this weekend and will order furniture next weekend because they said it takes at least 10-12 weeks. I'm 25 weeks and we want to have the furniture before baby is here.
I don't thin it would be a good idea to use a crib from 1982.

Re: Cribs/Furniture
we ordered the furniture from Behrs when I was 24 weeks. They told is that it would take 10-12 weeks but I got the phone call this week that it was in. So it only took 6 weeks but thankfully we ordered it early enough to account for any delays.

We registered for the same one! Westwood came highly recommended in Baby Bargains and they also discouraged the use of old cribs due to safety reasons.

Re: Cribs/Furniture
with ds we ordered the crib at 25 weeks from behrs... my parents offered to purchase it so we never registered for it, and honestly no one spent even close to the amount of a crib for my shower
as for the old crib, my parents had set up their crib from my childhood for ds and #2 to use.. i put him in in twice and he figured out how to get the side down because it was so easy....

Re: Cribs/Furniture
We are not going to put furniture on our registry b/c our parents want to buy it for us. Not sure when we are going to order it. We are renting a condo now until the end of July, and currently starting to house hunt. With the baby due in June I would hate to have the furniture delivered here & then have to be taken apart when we move. I think I may just wait to order it when I know I can have it delivered to our new house. Then I can use a bassinet or something in the condo in the mean time. I am not using my crib which my parents still have because it had an adjustable side, and they terrify me that they baby can get hurt. I was born in 84.

It may very well be better quality furniture-wise than what they make now, esp if it's solid wood, but safety standards have changed A LOT over the last 30 years, including for the space between the slats so that your child's head doesn't get stuck, mattress sizes might not be exactly the same, other SIDS-related factors, etc. I would not risk it, even at grandma's. Car seats and cribs should really not be used - everything else is fine but these two things, just not a good idea.

Re: Cribs/Furniture
I wouldn't use a crib that old. There are so many recalls on modern cribs that I couldn't imagine how many things would be deemed dangerous with that one! I ordered my furniture at around 16 weeks because it takes up to 3 months to come in. The place then stores it for you until you are ready to pick it up. HTH

Re: Cribs/Furniture
We ordered a couple of months before the baby was due. My parents and IL's bought our furniture for us, so we didn't register for it.
I don't know about using the old crib. My MIL was saying that the old cribs weren't safe because babys can get their heads caught in them. I think it just depends on the crib.

This is EXACTLY what I was going to write. It's not about the quality of the wood (which very well could be way better), but it doesn't mean it's safe.
