Cross post - How many students are in a LI class?
Didn't know where to put this.
How many students are in your child's LI class and what district is that? Or anyone you know's child/their district/amt of students.
I am trying to figure out if www.greatschools.net is correct in their student to teacher ratio, indicating class size. I was under the impression it was 13-14 students per class as per greatschools, but recently heard otherwise so i am trying to figure out if it is different in each LI district or the same pretty much.
Thanks

Re: Cross post - How many students are in a LI class?
I teach HS in a relatively large Nassau county district. We have 4 elem schools, 1 MS and 1 HS. We have an average of 25 students per class.
However, I think you have to keep in mind when looking at data such as great schools, they are taking into account electives, remedial classes, special education classes and general subject area classes.
For example, I am a special education teacher who teaches in the inclusion program so we have 2 teachers teaching 27 students in one class.

Re: Cross post - How many students are in a LI class?
an average of 25 students per class sounds about right to me based on the two districts that I've worked for
ETA I'm talking about middle and high school...good point. And yes, 14 would be an awesome average size but I've never heard of that!

Re: Cross post - How many students are in a LI class?
Ok thank you both!
Greatschools.net makes it seem like there are 14 students per class and then I was told otherwise, so I wasnt sure if it was that district only or all of them.
Thank you!

Re: Cross post - How many students are in a LI class?
I would say the average is between 20-25. However, I have 27 in my class this year

Re: Cross post - How many students are in a LI class?
Depends on the grade. In my district it is under 20 for K-2, under 25 for 3-5. I am unsure of Middle School, but don't think it would be more than 25.
I don't think any district on Long Island has class sizes of 14, especially the way the budgets are.

Re: Cross post - How many students are in a LI class?
if you read parent reveiws for the elem schools even in some of "the best" districts you'll see that there are complaints about classes being too large. in my experience having one child in college & another in middle school (with them attending different districts) 24+ students is the norm.

Re: Cross post - How many students are in a LI class?
Teacher: Student ratio also includes Specialists (PE/Music/Art/ESOL) and special education teachers. So, while a student:teacher ratio may be 14:1... in reality it's likely around 25 in a class.

Re: Cross post - How many students are in a LI class?
as previously pointed out....you are looking at average class sizes
for example: a science class with 32 kids averaged with a resource room class of 4, makes for an average class size of 18 :)
my husband currently has 5 classes of 30-32 in each, this is a "good" district on LI ... i dont understand why the parents arent nuts about the high numbers!

Wouldn't higher class sizes mean less individualized attention per student?
And I dont get it. How does a class of 32 with a resource room of 4 = 18? Did you mean to say 28?

Re: Cross post - How many students are in a LI class?
I know my school's ratio looks great on paper- maybe 1:20? But that's because they divide the number of teachers into the number of students, disregarding the fact that not all teachers teach every period of the day. It may NOT specificially mean the average number of kids in a class. Am I making sense? (I also do not teach on LI)

average class size is just that, an average of the class numbers....if you have a class of 32 and a class of 4 that adds to 36, divide that value by the number of classes (in this example, 2) then you have "18" as the average class size
i looked up my school on greatschools. It says that our average class size is "11" I have NEVER has a class of 11 students. I am almost always in the 26-30 range.

That is crazy that he is in a "good" district and has over 30 students in a class. That is way too many.

Re: Cross post - How many students are in a LI class?
The only time I've ever had less than 25 in a class is in my AP or college courses. They are maindated by the college board and Syracuse University to have the classes capped at no more than 20 or they threaten to pull the course from the district.

I teach middle school and have 20-25 per class (math). Very rarely do I go over 25.
