Croup question.......
So Jack has the croup - again.
He had an "attack" Friday night so I took him to the doc on Saturday. They didn't give meds and said in 2-3 days he'd be ok.
Had another one last night - so off to the doctor we go.
Other than the steam/cold is there anything else I can do for him?

Re: Croup question.......
When DD gets this her ped has us keep her for a few days in a room with a constant humidifier on high. I give extra fluids, he suggests keeping her sitting up when she sleeps if possible. If it gets pretty bad he has me give her a little musinex to keep the mucus thin to help it drain with the swelling. DD gets spasmodic croup though so not sure if that makes a difference. We also do the steaming when the actually attack starts.

Re: Croup question.......
croup is caused by a virus. unless DC is having a hard time breathing (skin pulling against ribs or stomach sucking in) there really isn't much you can do. DD sort of has croup now (had an attack 3 nights ago). I tried the shower thing and DD didn't want to be in there. Make sure you run a cool mist humidifier- also used some baby vicks vapor rub on her chest. Also- sometimes cool night air helps w/ attack (shrinks the pipes that are irritated)- so you can try taking him outside in the middle of an attack to calm him down.

Re: Croup question.......
Humidifier works for us as well. My ped also gives us steroids and that usually clears it up pretty fast. Ask you doctor if he will prescribe that for your little one. It really helps!

Re: Croup question.......
DS got a nebulizer when the croup was stubborn. It does not make it go away quicker, but it keeps the inflammation of the air passage down to help him breathe more comfortable. Other than that I keep the humidifier on in his room and take him into the steam in the bathroom.
