Crown moulding and shoe moulding- formal and traditional in style or modern or informal as well?

Do you think using crown or shoe moulding is more for a traditional, colonial style home or can it work with any style home? Do you think crown and shoe moulding make a home seem more formal or just a design aspect that can be in any home, casual or formal in decor/style/layout etc?

I hope I am making sense.

to me, can be found in any home of any style....casual or formal, country or contemporary...

i absolutely die for crown and shoe moulding

i find that nothing else "finishes" a room more......

it will be my next investment

Crown and shoe moulding can look good in different types of home but the design of the crown might not be appropriate in all homes

in our modern condo we had a wide base molding and shoe and no crown -the molding has a single groove in it

we did our high ranch with a craftsman/transitional look so we went with square edged molding - but we still have crown and shoe molding

so it matters on the style you want for the house how you do the crown and the shoe molding

We have an 1880 center hall coloniial completely modernized and brand new throughout. I have both in all rooms of the house. I went very simple and the molding is very narrow. I wanted to have a more "finished look" but I also didn't want the molding to overpower the rooms. My BIL is a GC and he told us to stick to narrow and simple molding because it can make the ceiling appear shorter or taller based on your molding/paint color choices. We have 10ft ceilings throughout the house, so we stuck with a neutral paint along with the narrow/plain moldings to emphasize the height of the ceilings.

Do you know what size moulding it is?

Thanks

Do you ladies think MOST people think Crown moulding is desirable or not such a big deal to some?

I want to say 1.5-2.0 inches but I am not 100%. Definately not 3.0 or more. I just remember looking through catalogues and showing them to BIL and he would yell saying it was too thick and would take away from the height of the celings. I trusted him and am happy with the results. If you have shorter ceilings, I would definately advise to stick with narrower crown and base molding.

It's def desireable. We're putting the both up throughout the new house. I think it can be more formal or less, depending on style, width design etc...

We just ripped out all of the moulding in this house, and replaced everything-- even around the doors and windows.

We did crown and chair rail in the main parts of the house (LR/DR/Hallway), but have the same base moulding everywhere. I love the way it looks and think it goes with any style.

I like mouldings & trim IF done correctly. There's a reason why finish carpenters make $$$. Chat Icon

I have a thing for buildups. I know a previous poster mentioned keeping crown less than 3" specifically with lower ceilings, but I disagree. We have 8' ceilings with a 6" crown/buildup and in my opinion, it gives the appearance of more height. I've already explained to my DH that I want to rip out all the 3-3.5" crown moulding in the dining room and kids' bedrooms so we can replace them with buildups.

did you get any estimates yet? I know you live by me now so I'm wondering how much the shoe moldings run.

I just came back from my friend's house in FL and they have the most GORGEOUS moldings and I want them NOW.

It works in any home style except really modern

IMO it makes it feel more finished which could make it more formal but only with furnishings that are formal otherwise it just completes the room

Definitely desirable. It's IMO the finishing touch in a room. I think it could work for any style. They have more simple moulding for modern and more ornate for victorian etc. You have to pick the right moulding for your style.

Not yet, but we had some guys put it up in the old house we were in and it wasChat Icon Chat Icon but well worth the money IMO...I'm waiting until we have everything finished up to get quotes, but we're doing it throughout the house, so I'm prepared to spend for it...
