cruise from NY/NJ in winter?
Anyone ever take a cruise from NY/NJ that leaves in the winter? I was wondering what your experience is like. I know, cold but can you still use the indoor pools and have an enjoyable time until you reach warmer weather?
Also wondering how are the water in January, are they choppy from here to the caribbean?

I wouldn't bc I feel like 2-3 days are essentially lost to the cold.

Taking a cruise this nov 6-18th
Its 12 nights, with 3 sea days going, 5 islands, then 3 sea days back.
It will probably be very cold the first day, and the last day since its early november

Personally, I've never done it, but my ILs have and they loved it. It's so much cheaper and it's only the first day or two that's chilly. They mostly just spent time indoors on the first day and then enjoyed the deck when they got to warmer areas.

Re: cruise from NY/NJ in winter?
i've cruised twice from NY in october and the weather wasn't bad but the ship rocked the first day out and the last day back ... i was told that cold weather makes the seas choppier - not sure whether it was true but that was my experience ...

Agree. I'd rather hold out a few more months and pay the extra money to not be stuck inside.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Its not so much the money factor, but only having certain windows of opportunity time-wise. I will have to think about this.

My mom went on a cruise in early December & said she didn't even think about the weather being cold, there was so much to do anyway.

Re: cruise from NY/NJ in winter?
We're leaving out of NY on Christmas morning. It wasn't so much the money, but the hassle if trying to fly over the holidays that was a big deciding factor for us. We know if mat be cold half the time, possibly the whole time, but who cares. We're still on vacation and there's plenty to do on board. I will say that I have read it's worth while to spend money on the pass to use the indoor spa pool.

Oh that sounds like a fun Christmas! I thought it would be something different too which I like. Have a great time!

Re: cruise from NY/NJ in winter?
My DH & I are leaving on Nov 5th to Bermuda. Besides the fact that this was a free cruise for us (DHs company is taking us) I honestly don't mind that it may still be too cold to enjoy the outside decks, I plan on going to the spa for a massage & exploring the inside of the ship. No matter what, we are still on vacation.
