OMG hope someone has an answer to this b/c DD is the same way.....almost 6 months. she comes off the the most un-sociable, sour little thing in front of people-even family! it stinks b/c she is really so sweet and fun when we are home. she is having some major stranger anxiety issues now. i think it's b/c it's just me and her ALL day EVERY day! it's like she gets overwhelmed by more than 2 people in a room! hope your DS outgrows it soon!

My DD was and kinda still is like that. Its stranger anxiety. She is getting a little better but still hates to be held by anyone than the people she really really knows. I read somewhere that you should comfort him when he is upset. And just tell everyone that its not them that he needs to warm up to everyone. So people dont feel like its them that is making him upset.

As with everything else. They say it will pass.

Cailen gets a bit shy and weepy around a lot of people - not hysterical, but heres what I do to get him acclimated:

I arrive early to wherever I have to be. I let him look around. He does well if he meets one person at a time when its quiet.


I sit him down next to me, and let him look around and then look at me to check my expression.

I let him crawl around and scope things out (now that he can crawl)

I hold him until he is ready to let me put him down when there are a lot of peolpe around

It can take a while, but it really has worked for him....

thank you all so much for your really helpful responses! although it stinks to have ds upset around friends and family, at least i now know what to do!

This has been my DD since she was 2 months old and it was a big party at my parent's house. She loves people but hates crowds and lots of noise. She was awful all Thanksgiving weekend due to the chaos in my house with all the people staying there.
I am dreading the holidays at my mom's. We are all staying in one house, it will be loud all the time and DD will NOT be happy about it.

My DD went through this around that age whenever we would travel and see a lot of people at once. i.e. holiday visiting...
It's over stimulation and too much going on for them at once. Children need their routines I've learned and when thrown off and so much thrown at them they get cranky.... It only makes sense, b/c I do too

I've just paced myself, limited travel distances, times and so on. Even now she is almost 4 and when we go up to NY we have planned every day out (times, who we are visiting, times and so forth). I make sure we leave around bedtime. get her ready at the place we are and she will fall asleep in the car.

It's hard, but it will be over soon... try to enjoy
