Cuomo declares flu emergency, easing vaccine restrictions
Cuomo declares flu emergency, easing vaccine restrictions
New York State Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has declared a public health emergency in response to the ever-worsening flu season, issuing an executive order that will allow pharmacists to administer flu shots to people under the age of 18.
More than 19,000 cases of influenza have been reported statewide this season -- nearly five times the amount reported all of last season, the governor's office said on Saturday. In addition, as of Jan. 5, the state Department of Health has received reports of nearly 2,900 patients hospitalized with the flu -- more than double in all of 2011.
"We are experiencing the worst flu season since at least 2009, and influenza activity in New York State is widespread, with cases reported in all 57 counties and all five boroughs of New York City," Cuomo said.
The executive order will allow pharmacists to administer the flu vaccine for the next 30 days to patients between the age of six months and 18 years. State Education law currently prohibits pharmacists from giving the vaccine to patients younger than 18.
Two New York State children and 18 youngsters nationwide have died from influenza, Cuomo's office said.

I am liking this because DS had his 2yr well-visit back in late-July, before the flu shot was available. Now I am afraid to take him to ped because that waiting room has to be a hot bed of germs!!

Cuomo declares flu emergency, easing vaccine restrictions
As someone who is having a baby in a few days, I'm sooo scared!!! DH and I both had our flu shots, but I'm scared for the baby! How am I going to bring him or her to it's well visits, when the pediatricians office is like a petri dish??
I feel sick over this

Talk to your ped. Newborn well-visits are usually scheduled absolute first thing in the morning. And ours would let us wait in the car and they would call our cell if I was nervous about DD catching something.

we did this also. I would wait in the waiting room by the door and DH would stay in the car with DS until we were called

Re: Cuomo declares flu emergency, easing vaccine restrictions
if anyone knows of a pharmacy in suffolk admininstering to under 18 please let me know. i called a bunch and are either out of shot totally of not permitted to under 18 they did not get go ahead from managers. i would prefer to bring my daughters to a pharmacy rather than Peds office w/ sick kids.

Keep in mind that there will be lots of sick people at the pharmacy as well sometimes that isn't necessarily better than the peds. There are always people waiting for their tamiflu or antibiotics to be ready. Many places have you wait in the area where you pick up scripts.

Our ped had a separate room for newborns to wait in for well visits so when DD was first born we went to that room or our Ped would show us right into a room to wait so we never waited with all the sick kids in the waiting room.
