Curious - concerns about prices/money
I don't know if it's my family or that we are the only ones who are childfree but whenever someone asks me what I paid for an item, most of the time I don't even know.
I mean, I'll look at the tag and generally know if it's crazy expensive or not. But I'm not overly concerned about it and if an item is necessary and I like it, sometimes I don't even consider price. I just get it.
We're not rich. We are comfortable, and like having the freedom of being able to purchase every day items with a minimum of fuss about price. If it's a big item, I go through the whole deal - getting quotes, researching, etc.
Do you think this is a childfree thing, that we're not scrimping for the good of the kids? Just an individual thing? That my family should stop asking what everything cost us because it's rude?

Re: Curious - concerns about prices/money
I grew up with little money so I've always tried to pay attention to money and spending...Dh had a comfortable childhood so he spends more...but since Dh has been laid off we are penny pinching to say the least. I've always been a "can i ask what you paid for that?" question asker...but only if it's something i am interested in and may want to purchase. But before our economic "crisis" we would take nice vacations and buy things.

I agree! Sometimes my husband yells at me and says- Why are you so concerned? We can afford it!
Other times I will buy something and not even care what it costs- like i just have to have it!

Re: Curious - concerns about prices/money
Honestly, I am the same exact way!
I actually feel guilty about it and sometimes feel like I SHOULD be checking more
I try, but we are just us two for now, comfortable and have the extra that it doesn't phase us one way or the other.
In some ways I know it is a bit wasteful, but at the same time...who has the time
Like you for big ticket items we do more research

I think it varies from person to person. I'm kinda like you unless its something
that I was specifically saving for I never remember the price. My ILS want to know what everything
costs and I can never tell them!

I usually keep an eye on how much stuff costs because $ can be tight for us at times, although I imagine if we had a kid or kids, I'd think about it even more.

Re: Curious - concerns about prices/money
I think this has more to do with individuals then whether or not you have children.
DH and I try to keep an eye on prices and I usually remember the prices of most things I buy. I always check them and have a hard time spending too much money on things which are not really necessary.
My parents, on the other hand, had five children and I feel like they were never as concerned with prices.

Re: Curious - concerns about prices/money
Whenever anyone asks what I paid for something I answer "5 dollars" no matter how big the item is, etc. So if someone says "what did you pay for that sweater" I would answer "5 dollars" and if someone said "what did you pay for your car" I would say "5 dollars." The only time I answer seriously is if someone needs to know the price for actual reasons (like a friend was thinking about buying that type of car and needed to know if it was within her budget, etc.).
