Curly Hair Girls - Product Help
Hi Ladies,
I have long dark curly hair. I usually blow it out straight (takes 40 minutes ). But in this heat, it really is not convenient to spend that much time blowing out my hair when its just not gonna look as great. I've always done the Keratin or some form of relaxing for the summer, but I am currently TTC so I do not want to put any sort of harsh chemicals in my hair at this time.
Sooooo, I've decided to embrace my curls. I do sometimes wear it curly, but it's been like a 3-4 step process, between serum, curling lotion, gel/mousse and then a finishing spray ( I need a lot of product to hold it). And I've yet to find products I love.
Any suggestions? I don't mind the cost at all.
TIA

Re: Curly Hair Girls - Product Help
Well, I can tell you what works for me but I have very fine curly hair, cut chin-length, so if you hair is thicker it may not work. I can't use a lot of product and I find that smoothing creams work best for me - I am able to use just a little (like a nickel-sized blob) and it holds my curl all day. I am currently using John Frieda Weather Works Style Sealant Cream, but before that I was using Chi Silk Infusion (can't use Chi in the summer because it doesn't prevent frizz as well, I use that in the fall/winter). My favorite curl gel is Herbal Essences Totally Twisted gel - it leaves my hair the softest.
The best thing you can do, with any product, is put it in your hair when it is *almost* soaking wet - just ring out the extra water with your hands, don't use a towel - and let it air dry or use a diffuser.

Re: Curly Hair Girls - Product Help
I've been doing the same thing to my hair for years so the products I use are nothing fancy but they work. I use Condition 3 in 1 mouse Maximum hold (it's white with purple on it and costs less than 3 bucks!). I comb it through my hair with my fingers when it is still pretty wet, but not dripping. Sometimes I will scrunch in Tigi Curls Rock but dont' do that daily, just "special occasions". I finish with hair spray. I use to use Paul Mitchel Freeze and Shine but now I use Pantene Classic Extra Strong hold. I spray it all over, put my head upside down etc. I let it dry a little and spray it one more time and done. It stays a little crunchy as it dries but honestly I think that is what prevents the frizz. Once its dry and you can soften it up more by touching it and the curls stay pretty much the same without the frizz.

Re: Curly Hair Girls - Product Help
I have long curly, THICK hair - My recipie changes, but my favorite all time MUST have product is Nexus Gel - They changed the packaging so it's in a green bottle and it's Huma - something Maximum hold.
I don't like going the hairspray route b/c I loathe 'crunchy' curls ........
But I also do all of the things the Devachan people would about -
I wash my hair w/ real shampoo (that no-poo crap is a joke) I condition like crazy - I towel dry, apply leave in conditioner, comb through, apply a mix of serum and curl creme and comb through and then scrunch up the gel.....and again comb through and then kind of rescrunch it up w/ my head flipped over ........
I used to love Pantene, but they changed their formula and the new stuff is God awful - Aside from my go to Nexus Gel, I use Garnier leave in conditioner, curl creme, and whatever serum I happen to have at the time - Usually inexpensive

Re: Curly Hair Girls - Product Help
Here's what has been working for me.
Shower, wash, condition.
After I get out of the shower, rather than using a towel to blot the water o ut, I use an OLD tee shirt. Absorbs JUST ENOUGH water. I think I have my hair in the tee shirt for about 5 minutes.
I comb it out and add infusium 23 from a spray bottle.
Comb again.
Then I mix gel with conditioner. The conditioner softens the girls but the gel holds them.
I usually scrunch it through but not always.
Then I clip some parts up and let it air dry.
This gives me shiny ringlets. I will try to add a picture.

Redken anti snap leave in conditioner, and redken shampoo and conditioner. I also got a keratin conditioning treatment which made my hair shiny and manageable and perfectly safe it was 60.00 to get this done at my hair place. She toldme it should last 3 months. It is 1 1/2 months and so far so good, HTH

Re: Curly Hair Girls - Product Help
I first use a curl mousse-any inexpensive one-to help with the frizz. Then I add Fructis Surf Hair Cream. I put it in when my hair is still wet/damp, and let it dry naturally. It's a bit crunchy at first but when I scrunch it as it dries, it gets softer and stays pretty nice. It gives me soft curls for the most part but I'm always eager to try new products so I'm going to try TIGI Bed Head Foxy Curls next. I've heard it's pretty good so I'll let you know how it is.

Re: Curly Hair Girls - Product Help
I used to have very curly hair... and then I had JHS. But I remmber what it felt like dealing with curls all summer! I liked the Aussie hair gel. Scrunch a handful of that through very wet hair. If you have to blow dry it, use a diffuser. Voila!

Re: Curly Hair Girls - Product Help
I ususally never take showers at night b/c i hate going to be with my hair wet! So last night i tried a new routine. While my hair was still wet i put leave in conditioner mixed in with some mouse. I then put my hair in a high bun and went to sleep. This morning i took my hair out of the bun, it was still damp so i added a little more mouse, and my hair has nice happy curls!
I have been trying for years to get my hair just right, and some days i do... but other days i

That's the thing with curls. They are either hit or miss.

Re: Curly Hair Girls - Product Help
Deva curl conditioner pretty much changed my entire life... well as it relates to my hair. They have a line of products but the conditioner itself made such a vast improvement.... just using the conditioner and sometimes the no-poo (like shampoo) made my hair insanely awesome. I talked to my curly hair friends and apparently everyone with awesome hair uses it. I really cannot recommend it enough!

Me too. And I got suckered into buying a ton of Deva Curl products because my stylist couldn't stop raving about them, but UGH.
Anyway, this is my (somewhat bizarre) routine: -- Wash hair at night. Regular old shampoo and conditioner, not necessarily specific for curly hair. Towel dry a little, but otherwise do nothing.
-- In the morning, re-wet hair just enough to get it damp, not soaking wet. Comb, then shake out. Add gel -- currently a Tresemme kind for curly hair. No mousse -- that stuff jacks up my hair.
-- When dry (or just before leaving for work), add a taming cream -- currently a Redken kind. Takes out any crunchies from the gel and controls the frizz.
-- Done!
