Cursing in front of children
How do you handle it if someone swears in front of your child? We do not swear in front of her, but recently a friend was visiting and did. How do you handle?

I make a joke of it - I tell them she'll mock EVERYTHING you say so please be careful!

Re: Cursing in front of children
My FIL slips up pretty regularly and it has driven me crazy since the day I brought them home.
About 5 months ago I got an old cheap vase and put a sign on it that says, "The Naughty Words Jar". It's really for him, no one else slips.
If he slips he puts $1. in for every word. The jar had $43. before he stopped
I'd have no problem correcting someone who cursed in the presence of my DC's, especially in my own home.

Re: Cursing in front of children
I would remind them that my DD will repeat anything you say. Depending on who it was and how close I was to them I'd try to be polite about it, and maybe tell them how I have slipped up a few times and now she loves to say "oh cr@p," and I don't want to add any new words to her repertoire. I also would try not to make a big deal in front of the child because that's when children's ears tend to perk up the most, if you ignore it they might not even notice it.
If they are a repeat offender and don't seem to care to hold back the language I would have to try to limit bringing my DD around this person. But I know in general cursing is more and more common these days and it's really hard to stop yourself sometimes, so as long as they try to hold back I wouldn't get too upset.

Re: Cursing in front of children
Well, I'm guilty of doing it in front of my own child I try to watch what I say, but sometimes I slip.

Re: Cursing in front of children
DH and I curse all the time. I thought I'd get better after DD was born, but it still happens. My sister and I cursed around my nephews and none of them do it (they're 3-5-7-9). So I guess I hope DD won't copy me like her cousins.

Re: Cursing in front of children
My DH slips as well as a friend. I've asked them to watch it. Now, all I have to do is give a look and they know. It hasn't happened in a while, but, I have no problem telling them on the spot.

Re: Cursing in front of children
A friend of mine uses cursing as part of his daily language. He does it around little kids all the time too. If he ever does it in front of my daughter I will say something. Even if someone doesn't have kids of their own I think you should be considerate enough to not do that in front of children.

Same here! I tell Julia they are bad words, so if we are out and someone says a curse word, she will tell them No, don't say bad words--lol
