cutting nails...
I cant cut my 4 week olds nails...I am terrified. I thought the 1st time I might have gotten too close to the skin so I stopped. My mom did it this time. Is there an easy way of getting this done without being so nervous?

Re: cutting nails...
I cut one of my DD's the first time I did it. I practically cried myself to sleep that night! Now I just file them. If they're REALLY long I wait until they're asleep so they're not moving around and do it very very carefully.

OMG...I feel for you. I would die if I had to do it twice...LOL Filing is a good answer. Maybe I will try that and then bring dd to grandmas when they get long

Re: cutting nails...
This is something I always did well. For infants, I wait until they are sleeping (even if you take the nail cutters in the car since they fall asleep there often).
For toddlers & preschool, I would do it while they were watching tv.

Re: cutting nails...
Paulette my hospital actually told me to not even try because you can make them bleed very easily (something about the nail being connected to the skin this young) Anyway the actually said to only file their nails. I bought some infant nail files from BRU and its so easy and she actually loves it....when she's to active I do it with her sleeping.
Give it a try, much less stressful

Re: cutting nails...
I am a horror at this. I cut her twice, so I actually have been filing her nails since she was very tiny, we play "beauty parlor" lol! She thinks it's funny, & I don't have to do it that often.

Re: cutting nails...
DD is 6.5 months old and I filed them until about a month ago. I got lucky and she actually likes having them cut. I make funny faces and sounds when I do it. My friend cuts her DDs when she is sleeping.

Re: cutting nails...
The thing that helped me a lot to do it easier is I plop her in my lap and turn on Baby Einstein way loud. if she has something to focus on other than the clippers she squirms less and I worry less about cutting her. I've gotten pretty good at it and it goes pretty quick. I definitely can't imagine not cutting them though b/c they grow so fast and she's a scratcher (herself, me, anything she comes into contact with).

I don't cut Molly's nails, I file them. It's much easier and I don't have to worry about getting too close.

Re: cutting nails...
One of my BILs used to cut his DD nails while she was sleeping. When she woke up with daddy clipping her nails, she freaked out. I would suggest not doing the sleeping thing if possible.
We never had a problem clipping, but filing should be fine for quite a while.

Re: cutting nails...
May sound funny, but I bite my daughters while I nurse her. Safer than clipping and quicker than filing.

Re: cutting nails...
i'm no help here. on xmas morning i was trying to cut DS's nails and i clipped a piece of his finger tip. it was still bleeding after 45 minutes so my doctor told us to bring him to the ER. of course by the time we got there it had stopped thank god, but i felt HORRIBLE! I've been so afraid to cut his nails since then, but they were getting so long. i finally got up the nerve to do it today, but i was VERY careful.

Re: cutting nails...
I use a regular nail clipper (the baby ones are too dull) and do it when he falls asleep on me. I just hold the skin back and clip the nail. Works very well.
My mom said that another way to do it is to bite them. But, I'm afraid of pulling the nail off that is attached to the skin.
