I'm so sorry for your loss.

I had a D&C with one of my MC. It really wasn't too painful, but I was scared too. I was 8 weeks when the baby stopped developing. My D&C was done in the hospital. We had to get there early, get admitted, get in a hospital gown with an IV. Wheeled into the OR, and was given light general anesthesia. They dilate the cervix and gently remove the tissue. I woke up groggy in recovery and then DH and the doctor came in to say it went well. I went home about an hour after. I was just a bit crampy and bled lightly for a few days. Then my period returned four weeks later.

Not sure if you discussed it with your doctor, but you can opt to have genetic testing done to determine if the baby had a chromosomal issue. If you are the type of person who needs answers, you can get that done. We did and it helped me greatly to know the reason for our loss.

FM me if you want to talk more about it. You'll be ok.

very simple, no eating after 12. After you get changes, put on a gown, they will take your vitals, go into the OR, placed on the table. They will start an IV, put you to sleep. you will sleep about 20 min, most of it be in the recover room. While in the Recovery room The RN will check on you, you get discharged. Expect heavy bleeding cramping, none of that or any combo for several weeks. Wear a pad everyday.

take Motrin every 4-6 hours.

No sitting in a bath tub only showers, no tampons or douching until your follow up.

So sorry to hear this news. Hugs

adding, based on above post. Genetic testing needs to be discussed prior to the DC and arranged. It can cost thousands of dollars. I say this because many of our patients dont realize its usually not covered and get a hit with a big lab bill,

This. I found out my second MC was tetraploidy after the chromosomal testing which is supposed to be very rare. I knew in my heart it wasn't my fault but knowing there was truely nothing I could do and that I could try again was a weight off my shoulders. Try to take it easy for a few days. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Re: d&c?

I've had a d&c twice, and one d&e. I did not find the d&c experiences to be too bad.... if anything it's much harder emptionally than anything else.

My most recent one was a month ago so it's fresh in my mind..... basically you show up, you get in the gown and they prep you .. once you get taken in it feels like minutes go by and then you're waking up in recovery. Emotionally, it's a train wreck, but the actual process itself isn't so bad. My d&e was another story.

I definitely suggest getting genetic testing if you can and hopefully it will provide some answers as to what caused the loss. Unfortunately for me, all my losses were genetically normal..... which is a very very hard pill to swallow.

Good luck getting through this time, I know how hard it is, Chat Icon

ETA- wanted to add, I didn't have much pain... took Advil once after returning home with my most recent d&c and I don't think i took it at all with the others- or at least the pain wasn't memorably bad. Bleeding was minimal.

d&c?

D&cs were really no big deal for me physically. Emotionally is another story. Depending on where you go they'll give you a sonogram to double check. Then you'll get anesthesia the.mn you wake up. It was not much different than getting my tooth pulled (except for the being naked part). Definitely get genetic testing if you can.

I never took any medicine after mine.

Thank you ladies. Everything went well. It was way easier than I expected. My biggest fear was being put under. I opted not to do genetic testing. This is my first miscarriage and I have 3 beautiful boys. My husband and I decided we were happy not knowing. Not sure if I will try again for baby 4. This whole experience was very traumatic. I give any of you who have experienced this more than once a huge hug. Even once. I feel unless youeexperience something you can never truly understand. I feel terrible now for not understanding. You have all been great. Thank you and best of luck to each of you.
