Dachshund
I just recently had to bring my doxie to get surgery, he had 3 slip discs.
Was wondering if anyone's doxie had it done and how long it took him to walk. It seems if I try and walk him with the sling his feet buckle and he isnt using them.

Re: Dachshund
My parents have a dachshund and he had to get surgery for the same thing i think. He was almost paralyzed in his hind legs. He came out fine though. It was hard though the first few days out of surgery. He spent like 4 days in the hospital and when he came out he was a ball of energy and he was 9 years old at the time of surgery.
As for the long run, he is okay, but still a bit wobbly. A few times since he has had problems but nothing major (thank god). He has needed steroid shots though. He is 11 years old now and we hope to have him for few more. All i can say is DIET!!! My parents put him on a diet and he has lost 5 pounds (he was like 24 lbs and now 19) and it makes a big difference. Also make sure he doesnt jump. nathan jumps all the time and we had to get him out of the habit.
Good luck!!!!!

Re: Dachshund
Ooooh, I have a dachshund and I am a dachshund lover. I cry when I hear of dachsies going through surgery. My current dachsie is young, and so far has no back problems. Before him, I had a dachsie that died in 1997. He had back surgery in 1992 (I think). The technology has gotten better and that was before the vets even explained to try some physical therapy techniques. I would say that the best results were sometime between 4 weeks and 8 weeks. He was walking before then, but I can't remember how much. Then, suddenly, he ran one day!!! He did great but the process was heartbreaking. His back acted up again right before he died. But that was 5 years after the surgery. My parents had him put to sleep but I think it was too soon.
There is a great group of people on www.doxielovers.com. If you want to chat there, they know me there as Kerie and Oscar (Oscar being my dog). There is also a yahoo e-mail group called Dodgers list, for people going through back surgery with dachshunds.
Oh, I hate hearing of dachsies having back problems. I still miss my first dachshund so much.
Please give us updates.

Re: Dachshund
MY Yorkie had surgery for his slipped discs. It took a few weeks for him to get back to his usual self.
Please be careful and watch him closely. Try not to let him/her jump off from beds, couches, etc.
