Where are you located? My DD and DS go to a dance school in Deer Park that I would highly recommend. We've been there for years (I even went there when I was a child).

I'm not sure what you're scared about?
I'm thinking of trying out this school:
http://variationsdancestudio.com
I've heard really good things about it & know several girls that go there. I was extremely impressed with the dancing on the cd I saw. They do a showcase in March for the performing classes. I like that parts of other costumes were reused in different dances. Nothing irks me more than having a $75 costume my kid wears once.
My friend gave me advice about finding a good dance studio years ago - look at the older girls classes & how well they dance. It's fine to have a cute group of little girls dancing but the mark of a good school is the older girls...and that doesn't necessarily mean all competitions & recitals.

Re: dance studio's for you BTDT mom's
My DD goes to a decent size dance school. Family owned and operated. It's not a chain. What we like about the school is the quality of dance moves that get taught to every level. Even at a young age they are learning the moves and combinations.
We did try out other dance schools that were more in home or smaller schools and i wasn't impressed with the quality of performance and classes that they had.
While my daughters dance school isn't a competition school, they do have classes that do competitions and they do have various levels of dance companies in which you have to try out to be in them. the plus is that if you want to be in the company, the teachers are honest with you and will work with you on the moves you need to master to be in the company.

Several dance studios have trials you can try to see if she likes dance before committing.
The last place we went to, I liked the owner a lot but I felt they were really geared towards the recital (which wasn't required but still a lot of the school revolved around it).
From what I know about the other school I posted, that place is more about dance itself.
But, I don't know of any in home dance schools.(sorry!)

Re: dance studio's for you BTDT mom's
I went to a small dance school in a basement when I was young and then mother transferred me to a larger one because she felt I wasnt learning much.
I havent really heard of any small in house schools though since I was young...
My DD goes to a smaller dance school and I think she is learning a bit considering the girls in the class are only 4&5. As Barb said above, you can do a trial at some of them and see what you think. Also, some offer a summer program for just a few weeks 0 - maybe you want to give that a try first?
