Daughter starting her "changes"
OK so all of a sudden I feel like my daughter accelerated to starting puberty lol. She is only 9 1/2 and shes getting little boobies or "bulbs" as my pediatrician calls them. Not even close to needing a bra but they pop out a little now. Also she needs deodorant on a very active day. I am not ready for this lol! I started much later I seem to remember and back than my mom didn't have any "talks" with me about my body changing etc.
My friends say I should have the talk with her about the possibility of getting her period and how her body is changing a little like NOW. But I look at her and she's such a little girl still so it just seems all so weird and I don't want to freak her out! I got my period at like 13 or 14 I think and I was tiny like her so I feel like we have time? Ugh some advice please lol?

I have an almost 10 year old DD and this seems common amoungst this age group now. American Girl makes a great series of books called The Care and Keeping of you. My DD found them informative and it sparked age appropriate discussions to build on.....

My DD was 9 when her changes started; it's a rough time so it's good that they know what the heck is going on with their body. We too used The Care and Keeping of You, left it around casually and she looked at it and asked questions and it sparked a lot of conversation. I also kept period gear out in the open and talked about my pms, etc so it seemed normal.

because of the hormones in the food we eat, chemicals etc girls are starting to develop earlier
our bodies ourselves is a great book to also buy, or look at from the library

My DD is 13, she got her period in 4th grade (Christmas vacation).
The American Girl books are great. We read together and discussed various topics. She also read them by herself. My DD is a swimmer and I kept thinking, how the hell am I going to teach her how to put a tampon in. She took the book in the bathroom and did it herself, no issues, no problems. Thank goodness!!

I felt like it was different with my boys (they are older now). We more joked about needing deoderant and my son would get excited when he started getting hair under his arms lol. There were no hormones involved and nothing drastic happened to their bodies like getting a period. Boys are easier imo on so many levels lol

OMG I didn't get my period until almost 17! 
I know that's not normal though.
I had to go for all these tests because I wasn't getting it. They thought maybe I had been born without ovaries or a uterus or who knows.
Every test was normal.
I went through hell as a teenager with these test.
Then one day bam, got my period just before turning 17.
I'm such a freak of nature!

Yes. And after that I was so damn irregular I could go for 9 months with no period in my 20s
You know what regulated me? Having my DD
Now I can set a clock by my period and I even know when I ovulate
Only took 35 years

My daughter is going into 5th and started to develop "buds". She is so proud and wants to wear a bra. Kill me now. I bought the American girl book and will start to read it this summer with her. She is autistic so that brings another level of issues in itself. I was told that once they start getting hair "down there", their period is a few months away. We haven't reached that point yet.
Does any of your schools teach Health? We start in 4th grade it goes over body hygiene (using deodorant) and stuff like that.

Ok we havent reached that point either yet....So I am assuming I still have some time. Not sure if they teach health. Shes ok about the deoderant thing and giggles everytime she puts in on lol

My DD had her 10 year visit in April at the doctor. The whole thing was about periods and boobs, neither of which she has, and isn't even budding yet. I hadn't even had the period talk with her yet...and she didn't even ask about it after we left the doctor. So I told her what it is and we had the AG book on hand. She DOES have a little hair down there, but, we are a hairy family! So I'm not sure it's ALL hormones, and the doctor said she was about a stage 2. Stage 4 is period time. She has little body fat, and is pretty active. The doctor said more body fat usually makes them get their periods early. Something with the excess estrogen in the fat. I started mine at like 12 or 13 I remember, so I hope we have a ways to go!

she was 10. It did seem so early. She was not the first to get it either, but she was one of the first. I did feel it was a little early, but mine started the summer of 5th grade. We were lucky she handled it so well and it did not stop or deter her from doing anything. Like I said her sport is swimming, she is in the pool 5-6 days a week and it never hindered that at all. Doctors were a bit surprised it came that early simply because she is an athlete and sometimes it starts later for them, but she's special..LOL

My daughter started at the end of 5th grade, she was 11. I had gotten her the Care and Keeping of You book a few months prior. She was very thin and had no hair anywhere, but was the tallest in her class. Only a few other girls got theirs before her.
A few things to keep in mind: The American Girl book mentioned above has some pages in it that I didn't feel a 10 year old was ready for (masturbation and what not), so I removed those until I felt like she was old enough. Also, show her where you keep the "supplies" and how to use them. My daughter got hers when I was not home and thankfully, she felt prepared and knew where everything was. Dads can be really awkward about these things.

Interesting u say that....my SIL says she was tall like my DD and than stopped growing and is now only like 5'3".

Interesting u say that....my SIL says she was tall like my DD and than stopped growing and is now only like 5'3".
there can be exceptions to this. They say you slow down after you get it but can still grow a bit for up to 2 years after. My DD is past the two year mark and is still growing. Not at the rate she did before, but she is still pulling about 1/2 inch a year. I think that is the exception and not the norm, but it can happen

I agree with this. >>>>AND I got my period at 9 and was completely clueless. I thought I was dying. I was not letting that happen with my daughter. I got the AG book and it opened up a discussion to give her just enough info about hygiene and menstruation. I recommend it.

I was one of the last to get my period (at 12). I was actually teased that I'd not ever have boobs (they are actually just fine). I remember seeing all kinds of things... from friends pregnant at 12 (yes multiple girls) to others who shaved their pubic hair so their mom would not know they were going through puberty. Seriously, i had a friend who thought she was pregnant at 13 because she kissed a boy (and that's the way it worked in the movies). I think by 10-11, most kids had their period and would teach how to put in tampons!!!
Talk to your kid. She needs to know. My DD and DS at 5&6 know about my period and how babies are made.
