Thanks for the comments.... 
The trip wasn't really voluntary. My brother got married, and he didn't want to postpone it for a few years, until the kids could travel easier. I think that was very selfish of him.... 
David can start using a booster at 4 years and 40 lbs, so only a few more pounds, and we can skip the car seat for him, at least. One car seat isn't too bad, it's the 2nd one that makes things difficult.
