Daycare Closed - Refund/Credit

For those that had no daycare available last week because of no power, are you getting a refund for the week?

DS and DD's daycare was closed all week because of loss of power. Although I didnt have to go to work on Mon and Tues, I had to find other means of daycare for the rest of the week.

Also to clarify we pay monthly, so if the kids are sick and dont go in we still have to pay for the day which I get, but since they were closed I am not sure what is right.

No - we are not getting a refund. We don't get refunds if they close due to weather related things unfortunately.

Our daycare was up and running though by midday Weds so we didn't lose too many days (although DS was out sick the previous week so it feels like we did).

Nope, no credit or refund. I didn't expect one though. They were up and running by Thursday.

Re: Daycare Closed - Refund/Credit

My DH and I were thinking of this...we pay monthly as well. I haven't heard yet but truthfully it would be great. He wasn't there all last week!

I have been thinking about this too. My Daycare is an in-home, licensed and insured place and I pay by the week. I am just ambivalent about bringing this up to her. I am going to pay her today for this week but I just don't know what to do about last week. My DD was with me the entire week because they didn't have power.

Re: Daycare Closed - Refund/Credit

we pay weekly but pay when he is sick/out etc ... i am nervous because we had to relocate over an hour away from home / not sure when we will be back home although i did return to work last week - my husbands work is still closed but should reopen soon so he is with the baby now but when he goes back too..then what.. we are too far away to bring to that day care.. do we pay until we return - probably- do we find something else in the meantime.. its all so confusing and stressful. I dont have time to find another day care that we trust plus I keep hoping we can return home (minor damage)

No, we wouldn't get a credit - though they were open Thursday and Friday and I guess to make up a little foe being closed, they are not closed tomorrow like they had originally been scheduled.

No, I don't think I'll get a refund. I was supposed to start a new day care on Thursday and since they are now closed, I don't think I'll get a refund on my deposit either.

I'm not interested in a refund, but I am concerned that the workers get paid. I've heard that MANY day care workers are not being paid for last week.

Re: Daycare Closed - Refund/Credit

also though, I think we're supposed to consider it a "tuition" just like college- whether or not you go/they close you pay and its rare you make it up by going to another class on a different day or getting a refund.

Re: Daycare Closed - Refund/Credit

Our kids attend a preschool. I would not expect a refund. As pp stated, we pay tuition.

The teachers still have to get paid, bills, etc.

Re: Daycare Closed - Refund/Credit

Thank you for your answers. I guess since it was a whole week is why I am questioning it. If it was a day or two I could see no issue but a whole week for two kids is a decent amount and I had to pay a sitter for the three days that I had to go back to work. So it was just a double hit for us.

Someone on FB posted that her gripe was that the teachers in her daycare were NOT getting paid & she was expected to pay for the full week.

That would bother me.

I wonder about the teachers too and if they are being forced to use vacation time or unpaid.

See that would make me mad too. If I have to pay then the teachers get paid. If they aren't being paid then what is the money being used for.

You know I was wondering this too. Our daycare is still not open and we aren't sure when it will be. I wouldnt want to short the teachers but I have a strong suspicion that they arent getting paid. Plus if my daycare is closed the whole month am I really supposed to pay when I have to pay somebody else. Not sure I would get paid that long for not working.

We are getting reimbursed. They are either crediting our next pay period, whether we pay by week or month, or we can save the credits for a later date to use if we go on vacation. I didn't expect it, didn't think about it to be honest, but I think it is really nice. I didn't think about the teacher's getting paid though! That would be terrible!

This is happening to us also, DDs daycare was closed for a total of 7 days. Our contract has a clause in it basically stating that in an event like this we will get reimbursed anything over 3 days so we're being credited for 4 days worth.

Same here. I was happily surprised because I was not expecting this!

Re: Daycare Closed - Refund/Credit

Ive been griping about this all week - to myself mostly and my husband!

Our daycare was closed all last week except for 1/2 day Monday when they called and told us to come get her. Which is WORSE then not going at all and hugely inconvenient. We pay weekly...automatically much to my annoyance because I would NOT have paid last weeks "tuition".

They offered to reimburse half. And I guess Im in the minority cause I still wasnt happy. If you shut down school for 4.5 days -whatever the reason- and I have to find alternative care-whatever that may be...why would I pay you anything? You didnt care for my daughter and you didnt feed her (they provide breakfast, lunch and snacks).

If shes sick I pay - If I go on vacation I pay - but if YOU close the school I shouldnt have to pay!!!

Just had to get that off my chest since my DH told me to stop rocking the boat Chat Icon

BTW - the teachers at our school only get paid for time worked. They were not companstated AT ALL for last week.

Those of you that got reimbursed for the week or credit to use on a vacation week can you tell me where you go? Cause Im going to start investigating other more family friendly centers with better polices!

no refunds/credits due to inclement weather as per our handbook

BUT - our center gave everyone 25% off the six days they were closed. They were also scheduled to be closed Vet's Day but decided to open at no additional charge which is nice.

Re: Daycare Closed - Refund/Credit

I believe we are getting a credit on next month's bill. But this is before/after care through the school district so it's likely different. I believe we are being credited for the days the district was closed which was all of last week & half of this week.

...a little off topic but I paid the nanny for the past week even though I told her not to come b/c we had no power and I had to stay with friends. Didn't think it would be fair not to pay her b/c we didn't have power
