Daycare moms and State Regs re Meds
DD is teething and I wanted to give her some generic tylenol throughout the day, but daycare said she needs a doctors note to give it to her because of state regs.
I find it so frustrating that I need a doctors note to give my child tylenol when they are teething, or saline in the nose when she has a cold or Anti itch cream when she has a mosquito bite. Its like NYS is implying that I don't know whats best for my child!
I understand when its a prescription med, but these are all OTC meds!
Does this bother anyone else?

mine can't give any meds at all, but i am still notsure i would want them too - it is so easy to overdose a little kid - i don't even feel confortable with my inlaws giving med- that is why i picked a place close by so if i need to stop over for 15 minutes i can

As part of a state regulating agency, those regulations are in effect for your safety. As annoying as it is, you do not want it to be THAT easy for someone else to give your kids medications.

I actually think its great that they can't give meds...I wouldn't want it lying around the classroom, either
Also, if you are nearby during the day, you can go administer the meds, yourself, without a dr's note....

They keep them in the office in a locked cabinet.
Also, the only time I can go during the day is during my lunch hour. She is napping then.
I have no problem with someone else adminstering meds. The daycare staff that does it all have special training. Much more than I got when I became a mom!

Same thing happened when I brought in Motrin or whatever meds when Mason was teething. I wound up giving it to him myself b4 his morning bottle there.
Also, when DS had a rash I brought in a anti-itch cream and the Director looked at the stuff I brought in and said they can't put it on him b.c of the ingrediants or something in it so I just did it

Pharmeceuticals? I agree....
mosquito bite cream? No, I don't think that requires a doctor note.
Tylenol - I can be on the fence about this. I see the argument that a parent may try to "Hide" a fever by giving tylenol for "teething". (which is not what I'm doing)

Is this a new rule?
I haven't had any problems with daycare in the past giving DD Tylenol. We are at the same center as EricaAlt. But I can't remember the last time E needed it, it was that long ago.

REALLY? As you know I used to go there and I never had a problem. I think it is relatively new. The saline was an issue over the winter, so maybe its new this year?

My center contacts the ped directly and they fax the forms over.
The meds are stored in the office, not the classroom, and are given as directed by parent and ped.
I like having this sort of check and balance in place personally.
We have generic tylenol, mylicon and saline drops there for DS.

i agree, Id rather have to bring a Drs note, then the center have the ability to administer meds without authorization. So no, its doesnt bother me at all. I will not be bothered by a measure to ensure the safety of my son, and for them its CYA too for insurance purposes. So I get why they do it.

I guess what I don't get is that if I am giving them authorization for a non prescription item, why do they need a doctors note? Its not like I'm leaving it there and saying - "just give it to her whenever..." I used to be able to fill out a form each day she needed it and they could only administer them on the days I fill out the form. Why bring a doctor into the mix for mosquito bites or saline nose spray or even tylenol- its my call if she needs it.
She is two. If she were under a certain age, I could see that - specifically b/c the meds all say ask a doctor if under 2.

I would rather them be over cautious then under cautious. You do not want a regulation to come into effect after an incident happens to your child. Unfortunately, these regulations are usually enacted after the fact...

My center contacts the ped directly and they fax the forms over.
I WISH mine would do that. But my ped has started charging for additional immunization forms. I can only imagine that they would start charging for all these "anti-itch" cream authorizations. DD gets bites all the time.

I think it's new too b/c I used to have Tylenol there for them to give if needed (of course with my permission). Maybe things changes since the whole scare of tylenol
Also, the Director said if it has a certain ingrediant or how much of it is in there. Depending on what the "caution" said. I think any regular creams they'll use like diaper cream, etc. THis had a stronger ingrediant.

I think mine charges a $5 form fee

Re: Daycare moms and State Regs re Meds
I'm getting nO work done today b/c of this but I looked up the state regs:
I interpret article 12 ii to be that is she needs tylenol for one day, I can verbally give permission to provide it. Also I interepret 12 iii to be that I can give permission for mosquito bite cream for additional days. Am I misreading this?
(12)(i) If an infant develops symptoms which indicate a need for over-the-counter topical ointment while in care at the program, such ointment may be given under verbal instructions from the parent or guardian for that day only if the instructions received from the parent or guardian are consistent with any directions for use of the medication or ointment noted on the original container, including but not limited to precautions related to age and special health conditions.
(ii) If a child other than an infant develops symptoms which indicate a need for over-the-counter medication, including topical ointments, while in care at the program, such medication or ointment may be given under verbal instructions from the parent or guardian for that day only if the instructions received from the parent or guardian are consistent with any directions for use of the medication or ointment noted on the original container, including but not limited to precautions related to age and special health conditions.
(iii) For all children for whom the day care provider administers over-the-counter medications pursuant to this paragraph, the day care provider must document that the parent or guardian gave verbal instructions and approval. If the medication is to be administered on subsequent days, written instructions from the parent or guardian and, in the case of orally administered medications, a health care provider or licensed authorized prescriber, must be obtained.

but I think, just bc the states says the can for one day, doesnt mean they have too. Just that they area allowed too. I believe they can develop their own policy in regards to administering meds as long as it doesnt violate the above terms. If they want to add actual precautions, I think they can. KWIM?

Re: Daycare moms and State Regs re Meds
My daycare requires a note for EVERYTHING, even non-prescription items, including diaper creme, vaseline, etc. The only exception is sunscreen, and even with that we have to fill out a form indicating which brands are acceptable for them to use and we supply it.
While I find it annoying that I have to get a note for diaper creme, I am glad they require it for Tylenol and other OTC meds. I think it's for my child's protection and I am not going to give them a hard time about it. I generally don't want them giving him anything anyway. I usually tried to give it to him at dropoff for teething.
