Re: DC area hotels?
oooooooh I can't help you with hotels, but can you give me info on the 1st lady exhibit? My mother would LOVE that (and my brother lives close to DC)
I'll ask my brother about hotels for you.

Re: DC area hotels?
just check out that the smithsonian is open -- because when we went they had just closed it for a big renovation and the first lady exhibit was in that particular one (because they have a few smithsonians)... this was in july of 07 so it might be all done by now but things like this can take a long time too so i just want to make sure you look into it before going all the way there. they had about 3 of the "most popular" dresses over at the air and space museum in a "mini" version of what is at that smithsonian so people could still see a few while the work was being done at the other -- all the best things are at the one that was being renovated like archie bunker's chair -- all the american history classics and fun stuff. luckily, the harry winston collection and the hope diamond are at the natural history one which was OPEN!
as far as hotel recs go, we stayed four blocks from the white house - i got a great deal on a discount hotel site (there are a bunch - any of them are good) on a sofitel hotel that was four star... it was SO centrally located.

then - these are a chain i was looking into - they are fun and funky, have locations alllll over DC and their prices are good too...

hope that helps! there are a few marriotts in dupont circle we also liked - easy to get to the metro and a nice little area - close to the zoo.

THe Kimpton in DC is beautiful!! My bro lives outside of DC so we never stay in a hotel, but we've been there for drinks, and have stayed at other Kimptons. They are IMO the best!!

Re: DC area hotels?
The American History Museum reopened this past fall, but at last check, not all of the exhibits were availible. I'd call to make sure that it was.
I may actually be going in 2 weeks, so I can let you know if we do.
As for hotels, you can also try Arlington/Pentagon City. Pentagon City is right on the boarder of VA/DC. There are a lot of really nice hotels there, and they're less expensive on the weekend since they're mainly used for business.
HTH!

We've stayed at pretty much all of the Marriots in DC and they were all nice.
