DD getting sick ALOT this winter - anyone else? Should I be concerned?
DD (just turned 2) is now sick for the 4th time since Thanksgiving! Prior this - she was NEVER sick this much - once her first year of life and maybe once every few months before this started happening. Now she has been sick every few weeks with pretty much the same thing except for this time - last three times was a high fever and bad cold - this time its just a lower fever (barely anything during the day - a little above 101 at night) with no real cold symptoms YET just a cough. This started Thursday night and she had only been fever free for 11 days before this one started!
She is not in school but, we are everywhere and she has an older brother (4) that has a very bad cold right now. He seems to have one cold after another as well BUT, he hasn't had a fever in as long as I can remember so I'm not sure if it is him bringing it home to her or not. Also, she is a thumb sucker.
I talked to the ped about it the last time she was sick and he brushed it off saying not to worry at all - it's normal and it's nothing serious (she has never even been on antibiotics) but, I am still worried b/c I have never experienced a child being sick this much!
Is this normal or would you be concerned? TIA

Re: DD getting sick ALOT this winter - anyone else? Should I be concerned?
I don't have any children yet, but I do have 11 nieces and nephews. I remember my sister telling me that it's normal for small children to get sick up to 8 times a year! That's what the dr told her, bc she was concerned about the same thing.
My nephew was getting sick every other week w/ a bad cold or ear infection. The first and second year in school is rough w/ all the germs they're exposed to!

My DD is 10 months old, and I swear she's had a runny nose and a cough since Thanksgiving!
It's driving me nuts.

Yes! I swear it's the crazy weather! Of my close friends, 5 of the 6 of our kids have had an ear infection in the past 2-3 weeks.

I also think it is the weather.. DS has had 3 respiratory infections since December. And then he got his 1st ear infection last month.. He isn't in daycare and he is an only child.. He isn't exposed to many kids this time of the year.. A lot of my friends kids have had the same problem this year..

Re: DD getting sick ALOT this winter - anyone else? Should I be concerned?
I am sure it's bc she sucks her thumb. I would really bet.
As you know, my DD is in preschool over 12 hrs a week and she still has only been sick about 2 times since Sept, maybe 3. They wash hands alot at her school so I attribute it to that b/c prior to that, she was home with me and only was slightly sick maybe once in a her life. She was never a thumb sucker and doesn't put her hands in her mouth. I am sure that's probably why your DD is getting sick, however, all kids are different.
Hope she is better soon.

The thumb sucking is the worst. But I do wash her hands constantly! My DS NEVER got sick like this at this age! Even when he started school he didn't get sick this much! So strange that it's just one cold/fever virus after another. And, she's never had the more typical things - ear infection, RSV, stomach virus etc. She's never even been on antibiotics. I just don't understand it b/c she was sick like once her entire first year of life. Aside from shots she never had a fever until she was almost 13 monts. I just feel like this is so strange and, honestly, it's starting to worry me alot!

Same with both of my boys. My 3 yo is in nursery school, I think they are good w handwashing. The kids literally sit right on top of eachother so if one is sick they all get sick! Ds has been like this since September when he started!
He's never been around this many kids before.

Re: DD getting sick ALOT this winter - anyone else? Should I be concerned?
No I wouldn't be too concerned - some children get sick more than others - also you BF if I remember so she might have had more of your antibodies for the 1st year or two.
There are a lot of things going around. I know several kids in my DDs' classes who have been out one week after another. I also think if you have one sick the other often gets it.
DD#2 has had 2 viruses since Christmas - the 1st was just a fever at night nothing during the day for 2-3 days. The second time she had a fever for 5-6 days (the end nothing at all during the day 98.6 but night 101-102). The only other symptom she had was a cough - but that turned into a severe double bulging eardrum infection. DD#1 I think gave that one to her - as she had the week before had just a fever nothing else for about 5 days then when the fever went completely away she got a cough. No runny nose, no ear infection and her lungs although sounding bad were clear.

Re: DD getting sick ALOT this winter - anyone else? Should I be concerned?
It's totally normal. My dd (22) months was at the per no less then 4 times in the span of a month and a half. No fevers, just nasty lingering colds. Her ped was concerned, but did jus kind of chalk it up to a run of bad luck. He put her on 3 different antiobiotics and she finally was able to shake it. It sucks because you feel for them. I hope your dd is Better soon.

Re: DD getting sick ALOT this winter - anyone else? Should I be concerned?
I was just saying this to DH today. My DS is almost and in kindergarten, he had strep the week he was supposed to go back to school from winter break and since then he will get sporadic fevers. Last week he had a fever at night. Woke up fine, was ok until today and had a fever again and threw up once. He has been in school since he is 2.5 and this is the worst year. Now, the year he started school when he was 2.5 my DD#1 was always catching something from what ever he brought up and she was 1.5 at the time. The baby is 10 months and I think bad a week of no runny nose since Dec. and actually just broke her fever virus today. January she had an ear infection. I don't know if it is because of what the other bring home or the thumb sucking but the other 2 were rarely if ever sick has babies.
