DD got an ASD diagnosis--now what??
My DD just got diagnosed with ASD. She is already in EI and now we will meet again to update her IFSP. The psychologist said she fell on the border of having it and its better to air on side of caution and get the services while she is young. I asked a little bit about pre k and he felt she would be okay in a community pre school with good structure but nothing more restrictive than integrated class. He also mentioned getting ABA..
She will be 3 in April so CPSE will be coming soon. I am going on Friday to meet with school district psych.
I have two questions-- 1)What services can DD get with ASD and what are some good things to ask about/for.
2) do you know of any preschools that work well with children that have special needs
We are In Franklin Square area..
TIA!!!

Re: DD got an ASD diagnosis--now what??
She may be able to get: Speech Ot... many kids on the spectrum have sensory integration needs ABA...most districts only provide this with an ASD diagnosis Also you might qualify for a behaviorist (sometimes the same person that does the ABA) to address behaviors in home and school Parent training Integrated class and/or classroom aide Busing to and from her school based program
Also ask your ongoing, but my son was able to continue all EI services after he turned three until the school based program started in September (he was a June bday)
In Nassau co. I have heard good things about variety.
Good luck!!!

Re: DD got an ASD diagnosis--now what??
With an ASD diagnosis your DD should be able to get ABA therapy. It couldnt hurt to get evals in different areas like speech, OT and PT. I didn't know my son would qualify for OT/PT until later, until DS' teacher brought it up (he was getting ABA and speech at home until he turned 2). You also get parent training. My DS is in EI right now through Little Village, so far its been great there.
ETA that is a special needs pre-k, sounds like you are looking for a typical pre-k, i don't have any recommendations there.

If she hasn't already had them, you should request speech and OT evals. Many kids on the spectrum have delays in those areas and the sooner you start those therapies, the better. Maybe a special needs preschool would work for her, in an integrated class and she could get whatever related services (speech, OT, PT) she needs there as well. If you are thinking of keeping her in a regular preschool, I would ask for a SEIT or someone to do ABA with her at school. My DS went to a daycare/preschool before he was diagnosed and they were pretty accommodating with having the therapists come in for services during the day.

For me, i wanted my DS in a special needs school because it was easier to get all of his therapies done there. They wanted me to have min 5 but up to 10 sessions of ABA and I wasn't able to fit in all of the therapies at home. I guess see what they are offering you and go from there.

Re: DD got an ASD diagnosis--now what??
We got ABA and speech right away. As well as OT. But I also needed PT due to low tone and DS had clear lack of some physical abilities. Alternative feet up and down the stairs. Etc... We also had family training.

She would qualify for ABA therapy. With EI, they will do home based ABA. I would look to ask for 15 hours of ABA therapy in home. With family training sessions once a week. Family training is when the therapist comes and sits with you and goes over the therapy, any questions or concerns you have etc.
Also, look into getting her into a school based program with teachers who are ABA trained. Some schools do ABA programs in the building as well. She should be able to get speech, OT, ABA and in a class all in the same school. That would be the goal, if it were me.
FM me if you have more questions!
