DD had her EI evaluation yesterday.
I don’t know if you guys remember, but Paige was having problems getting into a sitting position by herself, she doesn’t pull herself up, doesn’t crawl and has really never rolled over. She does sit on her own, but I have to put her in that position and she does cruise/walk already but, again, I have to put her in that position. A lot of you guys told me to call EI and I did.
The evaluator came yesterday and here is the scoop. She is perfect socially (which is such a relief). But she has problems with her gross motor skills. They were saying something about having too much flexibility in her limbs. They are doing a report on her and will be sending it to me. She will need PT twice a week. They were shocked to see her walking (I forgot to tell you guys). She cruises most of the time but she does let go and walk all by herself. She seems very nervous to let go of the wall, etc. But, she just loves to cruise/walk. I’ll update you guys when the report comes in.
My mom makes me feel guilty for having to put her through PT. She feels she doesn’t need it and that time will make her able to perfect her gross motor skills. The problem is that the PT will have to go to my mom’s house because I work fulltime and I am not able to take off from work. And my mom isn’t too happy about that. My mom is being like that “old school” type of mother and preaching about how we turned out fine and she smoked throughout her pregnancy, drank a little, etc. Its driving me crazy.
Please tell me that I did the right thing!

You did the right thing!!
Tell your mom to be grateful for the break that the PT will give her. The EI people are fabulous, I'm guessing your daughter will think that the PT is lots of fun!

Re: DD had her EI evaluation yesterday.
You SO did the right thing!! PT will probably do wonders for her. Sometimes all these children need is a little extra work and they do miraculously. I take my hat off to you for getting the Paige the support that she needs.
As you said, your mom is "old school" but when the physical therapist comes it will work out fine.
I am a reading teacher and when parents turn down services that their children can clearly use it always makes me I am glad that you are going to do it!

Re: DD had her EI evaluation yesterday.
You did the right thing. That's what these services are for, so babies get the help they need.
So what the report says, and you can always seek private treatment if you need to.
We just had our DS evualated too, but he did not qualify. They said he is too advanced. We take him to therapy once a week, and have since he was about 4 months old, for torticollis. It goes through our insurance, and we pay the copay. So EI would have helped, but I guess it's a good thing he didn't qualify. :)
Feel free to FM me if you would like.

Re: DD had her EI evaluation yesterday.
You completely did the right thing.
My sister is a pediatric PT. I saw the way she evaluated her own daughter and worked on certain things with her. A small issue as a baby can turn into a larger issue as a child and adult. By addressing the issue now, you are saving DD the possibility of future complications.

You definitely did the right thing. Once your mom sees the change the PT makes, hopefully she'll come around.

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." PT now could prevent years of problems later on. You are definitely doing the right thing.

Re: DD had her EI evaluation yesterday.
You did the right thing. By doing PT early it will be resolved sooner and will not lmit her in any way later on.

Re: DD had her EI evaluation yesterday.
You are doing the right thing
I could write a book about how my decisions were seconded guessed...and another book about how MY decisions worked out best for MY child.
You do need to get your mother on board though...PT doesn't start and stop with the therapist. You are going to have to do a lot of exercises at home and since you work...that means your mom will need to do them during the day. She needs to support this and be active in your DD's care.
My advice...reassure your mom that she is a great mom and her parenting was obviously excellent...hence why you trust her with the most important person in your life. But remind her that she taught you to be a good and caring parent and gave you everything that you needed. That's what you are trying to do for your daughter. Ask for her help and support and tell her how much you and DD love her for it.
Tell your mom that now more than ever you need her.
