DD is 2 weeks and everyone said the nights would get better...
Before we went to the hospital, DD would be pretty good through the night, up until a certain point. She'd nurse at a certain hour, and it wouldn't be enough. She'd stay wide awake for at least 2 hours. It's not like she'd cry, but she'd fuss. I couldn't understand how I would possibly need to nurse her for that long!! And strangely enough, the nursing wouldn't put her to sleep.
Well the past few nights in the hospital have been fine- except last night. She was up for THREE hours straight!!! From 2-5 am.
Is this just another thing I have to ride out? Has anyone else's newborn done the same thing? Tips?
This really could just serve as a vent There, I feel better. sort of.
Then she wakes up in the morning and it's so easy to forgive that face
Thanks all!

well, JMO whoever told you it get easier at 2 weeks lied.
Honestly the first month is crazy. If she had any kid of routine before the hospital its lost now. She is going to have to get back in the swing of things. 2 weeks after DS was born he was up forever it seemed. It will get easier but for now, if she sleeps on her head and sleeps well let her. Some night will be better then others, but for the most part the first month IMO is the worst. It will get better, I promise.

I totally think that expecting things to get better after 2 weeks is unrealistic. I say that you can hope for some normalcy about 12 weeks if you are lucky. Good Luck

not that I was expecting normalcy... I expect to wake up periodically. But when people say it gets better....I expect relief!
Jen, when you say she was up for hours, what did she want? Did she keep wanting to be fed?I feel like when I nurse her, it's never enough! Maybe she's a snacker or something?

Re: DD is 2 weeks and everyone said the nights would get better...
Who knows.. we'd spend hours trying to get her back to sleep and then she'd need to eat again. Id offer her whatever she wanted, rocked her, put her in the swing, anything and she would just be up and fussing. 11-4 everynight was a nightmare!
It got substantially better around 8 weeks.

Re: DD is 2 weeks and everyone said the nights would get better...
It got better for us at 8 weeks and really well at 12 weeks (when you are ready to go back to work).
At 2-3 weeks they have a growth spur and also at 6 weeks.

Re: DD is 2 weeks and everyone said the nights would get better...
Maybe your DD has her days and nights confused. My DS is 3 months on Monday and still wakes at least once during the night....he does go back to sleep though. Make sure when you feed her at night its quiet and dark...no stimulation at all. If you need to change a diaper do it with minimal light and make it fast. My DS was horrible sleeper at 2 weeks he was up most of the n ight also. It will bet a little better but for now its something all of us new moms have to go through.

Re: DD is 2 weeks and everyone said the nights would get better...
Like Jen, DS was the same way; he'd get up, nurse & then it would be an hour or more of him fussing. By the time he'd fall back asleep it was time to nurse again. This is infants though; its what they do.
He's 9 weeks now & is just slowly getting better w/ sleeping for longer periods of time (last night he slept 10 hours--although I'm sure that was a fluke).
Yet also around 3-4 weeks he started his witching hour(s) around 7 pm where for 2 hours or so he'd be fussing no matter what we do.
It does get better, but I think 2 weeks is being pretty unrealistic. Around that time their days/nights are still confused as well.

Re: DD is 2 weeks and everyone said the nights would get better...
1am-7or8am was a nightmare for us in our house. I just remember standing with her in front of the living room window with tears streaming down my face watching the sun come up. For us it started to get better around week 5 (I did have a baby nurse though from week 3-6, but I was still up at night because I could hear Samantha crying) By 8 weeks it was 100% better.
Tara - those first 2 months to me were a complete blur, I vaugely remember most of that time.

Re: DD is 2 weeks and everyone said the nights would get better...
DS is 3 weeks, and it really varies by night. Last night we were up from 2AM to 6AM straight with him fussing. The night before he slept from 11PM to 5AM! There just seems to be no rhyme or reason to the schedule this early. Yesterday he slept more during the day, but as much as I try to stimulate him and keep him up, when he wants to sleep, he wants to sleep.
I hear around week 6 it gets better?...I'm hoping!

Let him sleep when he wants. Sleep begets sleep (although probably not this early one). The better they eat and sleep during the day, the better they sleep at night.
Every baby is different. At 6 weeks many babies go through a growth spurt and they are also become more alert and more aware of their surroundings around this time as well.

Re: DD is 2 weeks and everyone said the nights would get better...
Hey Tara............TOTALLY normal!! There were times I was up with Emerson from 11 at night to almost 6 the next morning without a break or one ounce of sleep. Every now and again she had nights where she just didn't want to sleep. All of that craziness didn't really stop until she was about 3 months old. I was VERY happy to put an end to that!!!

Re: DD is 2 weeks and everyone said the nights would get better...
I didn't really have that-- but, there were some nights that were really hard. Just do whatever it takes to get them to bed (the 5 S's, the swing, bouncy seat, nursing, walking, etc.)-- and do whatever you can to help avoid the day/night confusion. I found it to be easier by like 4/5 weeks-- I had a newborn that slept from 10 to 7. NOW, it's another story entirely!

See, I was thinking sleep begets sleep, but he slept from say 6PM to 2AM and then was WIDE awake for hours! Normally if he is up at night from 7-11 he'll sleep better during the night.
We tried to swaddle him and put him down awake, but he broke out of the Swaddle me blanket! Do I have the only 3 week old capable of breaking through velcro?!
