Dear checkout lady at the Supermarket,
Kindly go eff yourself.
I really did NOT appreciate your snide commentary "on the cell phone, always on the cell phone, must be sooooooooo important" while I was talking to my husband on my phone while checking out.
After a day of insane work, running home, picking up my cranky daughter, carting her off to the doctor's office with me, the drugstore with me, and then the supermarket with me to pick up $300 worth of groceries that were sorely needed in our house, all while 5.5 months pregnant, all I was trying to do was call my lovely husband to ask him to start dinner.
How in the world is that your business, and where on earth do you get the chutzpah to judge my life and actions based on 20 seconds of observation?
Signed, I hope you stay in supermarket checkout hell forever more. You deserve the bad karma.

I happen to disagree, particularly on the checkout line at a supermarket.

Re: Dear checkout lady at the Supermarket,
Sorry, I agree as well. I told my sister to hold on the other day so I could be helped at the checkout. Noone wants to hear me (or anyone else) blab in their face.
I think the last sentence is uncalled for. She works in a supermarket, big deal.

I understand there are times where you can't avoid it...and sometimes sh*t happens, but The way I see it is... You just have to wait a few minutes to make that phone call. I'm sure the checkout lady has had a ton of people on the phone while at the check out, and maybe it made her job a little more stressful b/c the people weren't paying attention, who knows... She didn't *need* to take it out on you, and she certainly should have kept her comments to herself... but I know I've rolled my eyes (on the inside) at people who annoyed me at work. I would never say something to them though.

Re: Dear checkout lady at the Supermarket,
Look, I agree, holding an unnecessary, loud, social call while on line can be annoying. But, making a quick, 5 second call while putting items on the counter, even before she starts checking them out, is not sufficient enough to make the rude and snide commentary. Fact is, no one knows the other persons situation and in my evening last night, the ONLY moment I had to make that quick call was while waiting on line, while juggling the myriad of tasks I had to take care of last night.
It was not her place to judge or to comment and it pizzed me off to no end.

Re: Dear checkout lady at the Supermarket,
I personally don't see what the big deal is if you are talking on the cell phone while checking out in a supermarket. I mean if you were at a deli or a bakery or something where you had to order stuff, then yes, hang up the phone and do your ordering.
But at the checkout stand, how much interaction do you need to have with the cashier while she scans and bags yoru items? Normally they don't speak to me or ask me questions while checking out so it's not like you need to be paying attention.
I don't know, JMO

$300 worth of groceries sounds like a lot of food to ring up. Should she just stand there and watch the checkout lady scan each item? Making a quick phone call to let the hubster know she'll be home in 20 and to start dinner isn't harming anyone. That checkout lady should've kept her comments to herself.

Ditto. I think it was rudeness on both ends. I do think the last line was unnecessary as well (about her working in a grocery store)

yeah, but just playing devil's advocate, maybe she just had a customer who was rude to her while on their cell phone or something. Just like she didn't know YOUR situation, you didn't know HERS.
With that said... she totally discounted herself by making a rude comment.
I agree with you, it was RUDE. and look- I understand sometimes you just have to make a quick call.

Maybe it's just me... I personally hate the whole cell phone age. People are CONSTANTLY on their phones and I feel like-- we lived without them before, why the need to use them now.
I just always find it rude for people to be on their phones on line, don't know why. Doesn't matter if you're not interacting with the cashier. IMO of course.
I don't expect anyone to agree with me.

This is true, but the difference being that I would never DARE to judge and say something as rude and condescending as she said to me. It's called understanding. There's simply NO excuse, whether you had a bad day or a bad customer, to be snide and rude to another person.

I think most of us will agree that what she said was rude and unnecessary.
Some may disagree on whether or not it is rude to be talking on your cell phone while in line at the supermarket or anywhere else for that matter.
However, I personally think that what you said above is a bit harsh. Telling her to go eff herself and that she deserves bad karma, IMO, is a bit extreme and I would hope that you truly don't feel that way.

I don't care if it's $1000.00 worth of junk. The cashier isn't a background object. She's right there in front of you. A live human being. How about some everyday niceties? This world has a serious case of ME, ME, ME. The five second phone call could have taken place as she walked out of the store.

I don't know... how would you feel if someone was on their phone while you were trying to work? You know? I just think it's a form of respect. I've never scanned items, do I don't know how much of a distraction it might be for a customer to be having another conversation.

I too have always thought it was rude when people are on their cell phone at the store checkout but after you describing your day I think I will be a little less judgemental next time ......but I usually tell whoever I am on the phone with either hold on or I will call them back so I am not being rude

I definitely agree with you there. TOTALLY.
but... you're now coming on here telling her you hope she has 'bad karma' & 'stays in supermarket h*ll' a wouldn't that *kinda* be doing the same thing? Except your 'offense' is lessened by the fact you didn't belittle her in front of her face.
She was wrong. yes. I agree.

Ok, ok, that was harsh, I admit. That's more so the pregnancy hormones talking than anything else. But seriously, I had a REALLy bad day yesterday and was on the verge of tears by the end of the night, while trying to entertain my cranky daughter and get enough food to last for the next 2 weeks, knowing I wouldn't be able to cart my pregnant arse back to the supermarket again for a while.
I've been feeling like I'm on the verge of a mental breakdown, trying my best to juggle everything in my life right now, so the last thing I needed to hear was someone judging me on the attempt I'm making at time management and juggling everything.
Personally, if I saw a mother on line somehwere, with a toddler on the verge of a meltdown, while obviously pregnant, I'd give her a little bit of a benefit of the doubt and keep my comments to myself.
But that's just me...

Re: Dear checkout lady at the Supermarket,
I am sorry you were having a bad day
but maybe she was too. When I was a cashier, sometimes hours would pass before someone would look me in the eye and actually acknowledge that I was standing there. And there is a whole routine you are supposed to go through and they check up on you "Did you find everything you were looking for? Do you have your card with you? Will you be using any coupons? How will you be paying for this?" so it would definitely slow things down if someone was on the phone.
ETA: I would have NEVER said something out LOUD!

there are times I am thankful I have my cell phone. But... I always try to remind myself that I CAN live without it.
if you walk the streets of manhattan, 8 out of 10 people are on their cell phones.
you know what i HAAAAAAAAAAAAATE? When you're on a train and someone is having a FULL ON conversation.
omg that annoys me to no END.

Really? Live my life for a second. How was I supposed to grab my phone out of my purse, while pushing a 2 ton grocery cart, with my daughter in it, down a hill, trying to prevent it from careening down the hill, while crossing the parkingl lot with cars streaming by? And by the time I got to my car, making that call would have been worthless.
My point being - everyone has a story and a reason. I wasn't making a 10 minute loud social call, I made, literally a 5 second call to hubby to ask him to start dinner. I hung up the phone, said hello to the unkindly woman, put all the groceries on the counter, and then even helped pack them and put them in the cart.
