In the minority here. Beth did nothing wrong. We don't know that she didn't acknowledge the cashier, thank her, etc., even with the call, and I can't imagine that anyone could see her in the situation she described and begrudge her what she did.
The cashier should never have been so rude. Beth is a class act, from what I've seen, who has not spoken down to anyone--not on here and not to the cashier. Her private thoughts, which she chose to make us privy to, are hers and hers alone. She has an absolute right to them. I wish more people in general thought about talking to and treating others with the class and dignity that Beths seems to display on here & in real life.
Thank you

Re: Dear checkout lady at the Supermarket,
Sorry but if I'm on the phone for WHATEVER reason, it is nobody's d@mn business to make comments like that to me. There is very little interaction between you and the checkout lady unless you want it to be more...if I am asked a question, I say hold on to whomever I am on the phone with and I answer her/him. She had no place to make comments like that to you.

IDoes that make Beth better? I think so.
so I don't think Beth should be attacked AT ALL b/c we've all had bad days and then something sets us off and we go apeshit (it happens to me AT LEAST once a week )
but I don't think we can determine from THIS instance if one person is better than another.
as uncharacteristic this post is of Beth, the cashiers comments could have been equally uncharacteristic.
we all know and have benefitted from the pains Beth goes to to treat people fairly and levely, so I for one do not begrudge her an EFF YOU post once and awhile.
but I don't think we should pit one person against another either.

Re: Dear checkout lady at the Supermarket,
I would also like to say, that if she hadn't started ringing you up at the point of the phone call, she had no business saying anything.
phone etiquette is purely for face to face interactions, and not pending ones.

exactly, according to her post, she was still helping the prior customer, the cashier should have been more concerned with giving that customer "great customer service"

Re: Dear checkout lady at the Supermarket,
I'm sorry, but a checkout lady should not be making a comment like that.
What if God forbid someone was sick, in the hospital, or dying? I pick up a call from my child's daycare no matter where or what I'm doing. Let people think it's rude. They don't know my life!!!
Some calls are important - I see nothing wrong with it.

My expression is "A pox on your house!" I have had to explain myself to those in the backseat what a pox was.
I always get off the phone when someone is waiting on me. If someone is waiting on line or putting their groceries on the belt before they are waited on, I see no reason they should have to get off the phone until they're conducting a business transaction.
Also I agree - out of character & Beth is hormonal. Next time hand the phone to crazy toddler in meltdown mode & tell her to tell Daddy to start dinner because Mommy's having a bad day. At least it will distract her.

Beth, you didn't say this very important part until much later. I do apologize for my earlier comments. I thought you were with her, not next in line. This does make a difference IMO. I still feel the other way HAD you been the person she was helping.

Yes, but said crazy toddler knows how to operate mommy's iphone and goes directly to the little einstein videos uploaded onto said phone and plays them. Next thing you know, I'll be judged for letting my kid watch movies out in public, instead of giving her one-on-one attention

Re: Dear checkout lady at the Supermarket,
that you were having a bad day yesterday- just wanted to suggest grocery delivery- you can order online through stop n shop or waldbaums and they deliver right to your home at the time you choose- makes life so much easier. I cant even imagine how exhausting it must be to have a two year old much less shop with them & be pregnant at the same time

Re: Dear checkout lady at the Supermarket,
I really do not think Beth did anything wrong. Maybe this is because I too am 5 months pregnant and have a toddler and I work (albeit from home) but when I realize I need to make a call - I usually make it right that second because if I don't - then poof! - its out of my brain and I completely forget!
Perhaps I am shopping at the wrong stores, but I have minimal interaction with the check out person - we just sit there in uncomfortable silence. Usually, I am with my 2 year old - so my attention is not on the cashier anyway - its on trying to prevent my 2 year old from grabbing all the goodies in the check out aisle.
Fortunately, now I use the u-scan system or the self-checkout as I find I can do it quicker myself.
The fact remains that it was none of anyone's business why Beth was on the phone and certainly not the cashiers place to make a comment. SHE was the one who was at work, not Beth. Whenever, I have to be on a call with a client etc. no matter how rude or idiotic they are - it is MY job to bite my tongue.

I think the context of my post was misunderstood. Another poster said Beth thought she was better than the cashier. Adding my voice to those who sharply disagreed with that post, I pointed out thatbased on the way they interacted and treated each other, if you're inclined to view things through that prism, Beth WAS acting/"being" better. It was a response to a post, not an independent attempt to pit anyone against anyone. Based on what I've seen, I stand by my assessment. As I've said, Beth published her private thoughts, but that woman, who was at work and supposed to be acting professional, was rude and hurtful.

Re: Dear checkout lady at the Supermarket,
I don't think Beth did anything wrong as she was on the phone before her turn. Can't say I agree with putting bad juju on her, but I chalk it up to venting and having a cruddy day.
However, I wanted to respond to this question:
Posted by bri1980
I totally agree....whos Business is it if I am on the phone? And who is the checkout lady that I owe her my complete attention?
The check out lady is a person who is waiting on you which is why I think she deserves your complete attention and respect.
I agree with a lot of other posters-I don't think we should be on the phone when we are transacting with others. I think it's kind of rude and in most cases avoidable.
I do think there are times when you must but I don't think it should be a given that it is okay in all circumstances. I think it is dismissive and disrespectful to talk on your phone in front of others. But that's me. I'm old fashioned.
I don't think Beth was doing any of this in her situation but since the conversation shifted, I thought I would post my opinion on the new topic.

Re: Dear checkout lady at the Supermarket,
This is coming from someone who comes from a retail family whose business was based on face to face interactions.
Would have been nice if she weren't on the phone? Yes. Did she owe anything to the check out lady? Not one bit.
Had the checkout lady worked for my family and spoken to a customer in that fashion, she would have been out on her a$$ without a job. You NEVER speak to a customer that way regardless of whether or not you feel disrespected. The customer, like it or not, is ALWAYS right. This is why my family had its business for so long with repeat customers over 50 years. Checkout lady should have sucked it up and passed judgment silently. Too bad. So sad.
