Dear Diary, Night # 2-no sleep

Ok, here we go again. The child has not slept in 48 hours other than a few 20-40 min naps during the day and nothing at night! I don't know what else to do for her. I've given her decongestant drops they don't seem to help. Other than a frighteningly clogged nose and utter misery on her part (well, and mine) I don't see any other symptoms. Well she did throw up her solids but she's drinking and keeping the bottles down. No apparent fever. So sad. Don't know what to do with her. And I was supposed to work tomorrow. Yeah right! Meanwhile, my MIL is terrific and offerred to stay up with her, but when anyone is with her she cries and I can't sleep with her crying so I can't even take advantage of her offer. How crazy is that? Thanks for listening. She's crying again. Gotta go Chat Icon

Is she teething? Ava gets a horribly stuffy nose when she's brewing some teeth. I gave her some Motrin this morning (after she didn't sleep last night), and it helped her take a two hour night. I don't know if you are open to trying that, but in anycase, Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Are you giving her the decongestant before bed? If so it can keep her awake. I wonder if that has anything to d with her not sleeping. Maybe she's supersensitive to the pseudoephedrine.

Chat Icon Chat Icon I know what you mean. When DH wakes up with baby, I get so frustrated hearing him struggle that I get up anyway.

I hope you both get some sleep!!
Do you have baby vicks rub there? I buy a mild version of Vicks Vaporub which is for 3 months and up...that always clears the boy up nicely!

I hope you're sleeping by the time you see this. Have you tried putting a really thin pillow under her mattress to elevate it a bit?? Have you given her anything like Dimetap? How old is she? If she is under 3 months try pillow if she is older than 3 months you may want to try so medications, just at bed time so you and she can get some rest. I believe it's Tylenol that makes a product that we used called Stuffy Noses.

Will she sleep on you if you are elevated? I needed to sleep with Luka on the couch one night when he was sick last week because he was so clingly and we werent comfortable in bed. Then he ended up sleeping with us because if he cried he would cough really bad and I didnt want him to cry. I would let your ped know about the decongestant because my ped said that sometimes it makes them irritable and that I should switch. I used a generic brand of Pedicare and I wont anymore because he was cranky on it but not on the real one. I hope that you guys get some sleep soon.

Sydney is also not sleeping well so I feel your pain. Did the doctor tell you to give the decongestant? I have heard of many babies have side effects to them - my nephew's heart was racing when he was given them.

Re: Dear Diary, Night # 2-no sleep

It's really interesting what you all are saying about the decongestant. It really helped her last time so I figured it's ok, but who knows. I think it did help her. She did sleep on me elevated last night on the couch but I really couldn't sleep sitting up. But MIL and I each took a shift of about 4 hours so that's better than all night. She's napping lots this morning so I think that means that the worst of it is over and it will hopefully get better by the end of the week. Thanks everybody for your thoughts and suggestions.

I sort of think so deep down in my heart, but Dr. said no. She doesn't see anything. But I don't know that she'd necessarily be able to see it if it's far off. Who knows? But I'm sick too so it's probably a cold maybe combined with the teething.

Re: Dear Diary, Night # 2-no sleep

maybe she has fluid in her ear from the congestion///it can be very painful to lay down if it continues another night I would take her to the ped

Antonio did this New Years eve and the next night. He had a runny nos. I toke his to the doc after no sleep for two nights and he had fluid in his ear.

Good luck tonight

I am TTC but have a 7 month old niece, and when her nose is really stuffy my sister plugs in the children's vapor thingy. It is sort of like Vick's but it is a plug in on the wall. I am not sure of the name but I am sure it is easy to find at the drug store. HTH and I hope u both get some sleep soon.Chat Icon
