Dear fellow LIRR passenger...
Congratulations on getting a seat! Since it's a midle seat, you've just broken the hearts of the window and aisle seat passengers, who thought they had a chance at having an empty seat next to them. It's a bit like winning the lottery.
The ride is 25 minutes. Shorter than a sitcom. Surely you can hold off for a mere 25 minutes on eating a smelly everything bagel that's dripping butter out of the tin foil and paper wrappers, trying to drink your coffee while maneuvering to get out your train ticket from the bottom of your bag, applying makeup and (today's winner!) picking your nose.
So, when the aisle seat passenger leaps up to stand by the doors as soon as the train reaches the tunnel, that's your cue to move to the aisle seat. Immediately. There's no need to continue to sit next to the window seat passenger, especially while you continue to pick your nose.
Warm regards, Skeeved woman in the window seat

heh. I'm guilty of doing all of the above on a train when I lived on LI and commuted to work.

UGH! I'm grossed out for you!
Yesterday, someone grabbed the middle seat next to me (and yes, I realize that my bag does not pay for that seat, but I really hate when someone sits there) and proceeded to sit ON TOP of me, pushing me into the window... I swear, I thought I was going to break thru the side of the train!

(and yes, I realize that my bag does not pay for that seat, but I really hate when someone sits there)
No offense but this bothers me to no end. People with their huge bags putting them on the seat next to them thinking nobody will sit there.
Sometimes I am just in a mood where I will purposely look for whoever has the largest bag on a seat (passing up sitting next to people with no bags), and ask them to move it so i can sit there. So go ahead and flame away.
I occasionally have a large bag myself and when I know there are people coming on the train I respectfully put my bag on my lap to see if anybody wants to sit down. Once the doors close and everybody is seated I put my bag back until the next stop.
It just annoys me when people are trying to sit down and everyone and their mother has a bag on a seat. The overhead bins are there for a reason, use them!
And then there are passengers coming on struggling to find a seat and some people are STANDING for the remainder of the ride because of this.
Ok that's my LIRR rant for the day.

Don't get me wrong... I willingly move my bag if someone is looking to sit down. In the morning, I'm usually asleep, but I sleep lightly enough that if someone says excuse me, I'm making room for them.
I am NOT leaving my bag in the overhead wrack because, quite honestly, I don't trust ANYONE. I'm not leaving my bag up there (which contains everything I need on a day to day basis) vulnerable to anyone, especially if I know I might drift off during the ride.
I'm not going to deny anyone a seat just because I dont' want to keep my bag in my lap, but with that said, it I still hate when people take that middle seat (esp. when they have no consideration for the people on either side of them)... that's all.

Re: Dear fellow LIRR passenger...
How gross !!!
The bags don't deter me from sitting, I just choose to stand for the whole 50 minute ride if there are only middle seats left. I know how it feels to have someone squashed in next to me so I never want to be "that guy"
