Debra Messing flatly refused to wear falsies
The president of NBC tried to force Debra Messing to wear falsies when her hit sitcom "Will & Grace" launched, the comedienne claims.
"When we shot the pilot, I was handed - in the wardrobe - chicken cutlets," Messing said at a Tribeca Film Festival panel Sunday. "They were [supposed to be] boobs. And I wore them.
"After the show was picked up, at the first fitting, I said, 'I don't want to wear these. I actually like the idea that she's completely flat-chested, and I think there's comedy in that.
"We shot three episodes, and then I was called to my executive producer's office. They sat me down and said, 'We got a call from the president of NBC, and they said, 'What happened to her boobs?'"
Messing's response: "I said, 'F- 'em.' They were not happy. ... They said, 'You have to wear them,' and I said, 'No.'" Messing prevailed, and her teeny top became a punch line. A spokesman for NBC refused to comment.
"Hollywood wants its women hot and funny, and that's kind of hard because there aren't that many super hotties who are also funny," said Rachel Dratch, the "Spring Breakdown" star, who joined Messing, Susie Essman, Samantha Bee, Rachel Harris and "Austin Powers" director Jay Roach to ascertain whether or not women are funny. "Men can be fat, bald, old, whatever. People want to see Will Ferrell fall down naked. They don't want to see me do that."
Added Messing: "I'm like the dancing monkey now. I'm like, 'Okay, who's going to give me a job?' And there are a hundred scripts out there and there're only two [roles], and one is for Cameron Diaz and one is for Julia Roberts."
Not so. Messing is in two new movies at the fest: Ed Burns ' "Purple Violets" and the poker pic "Lucky You."
