Decorate a onesie - game for shower??
I'm helping to plan my BFF's baby shower and I once saw someone had a game/activity at their shower where everyone got a plain white onesie and the guests decorated it for the new baby.
I LOVEEEE this idea, but don't really know how to go about it.
I know to get lots of onesies - can anyone tell me the best place to get them at the best price??
Then what do I get for the decorating portion? Does it have to be some kind of special paint? Not markers, right? One set per table? I'm trying to figure out the logistics of it all.
Also, should I get a couple of different sizes for the onesies so they're not all "0-3" months?
THANKS in advance!!

Hey Yesi, what a great GAME (and i hate shower games but this one's cute!!) Definitely get a selection of sizes, wash them prior to the shower, and here are instructions Have fun!!!
Oh and try the Carter's outlet, they are great for "basics" - get long and short sleeved ones as well!!!

Yesi, that is such a sweet idea! Maybe Walmart or Target would have cheap onesies? I would get a variety of sizes, like Colette said.

can I play devils advocate?
I'm not sure if I'd use the onsies people painted on...in my honest opinion and this game could get expensive. But this is just me....

Re: Decorate a onesie - game for shower??
Awesome, thanks so much!!! I totally didn't even think about washing them beforehand, so that's a great tip. And great tip about short and long sleeved ones!
I assume I can get fabric markers/fabric paint at somewhere like Michael's, yes?
And really dumb question, but I saw this step: "Step 3 Stabilize the outfit. Cut a rectangular piece of cardboard 8 inches wide and 16 inches long. You need to adjust the size of the cardboard for larger onesies. Stretch the onesie over the cardboard. The onesie should be tight with little give."
Do you think I can get away with skipping that? I don't know how many people will be coming yet, but the guest list is huge and I can't see myself cutting out that many pieces of cardboard, etc. I was hoping to just have them decorate it at their tables.

Dev and LB, good point!!!! I hadn't even thought of that!!!! LOL, can you tell I'm so not a mommy?!?
I was thinking that the cost might turn out to be too much, that's why I wanted to get all the logistics of it... Maybe I can have just the grandparents or immediate family do it?

Re: Decorate a onesie - game for shower??
My mom went to a shower recently where they did this, and everyone loved it. BUT, I personally would not have used the onesies. Just not my cup of tea. For my shower, my mom bought a bunch of books (cheap books-- like the golden books, and packages of letter/number books) and everyone picked out a book and wrote a personalized message to DD. I loved that idea!

Re: Decorate a onesie - game for shower??
You don't have to do just onesies. You can also do bibs and burp clothes that are much cheaper. You can mix it up so that the onesies, which are the most expensive AND the least actually used, are the least in quantity.
Infantblanks.com has bibs as low as like 60 cents a piece for tie bibs and 95 cents for velcro. Also, the onesies are like 2 bucks. Burp clothes are really cheap and you can get them in bulk packs of 10 at baby stores or on ebay.
We are planning to do this at my shower but there will be like 90 ladies so it would be crazy to have 90 onesies haha.

Re: Decorate a onesie - game for shower??
Save your Michaels 50% & 40% coupons. Go each week and buy the gerber onsies there. This way you will pay about $5 per 5pk of onesies. Also they have a great set of 20 fabric paint bottle/pens for 19.99 in the sane aisle, use your coupon to get for like $10. That's what I did!

Re: Decorate a onesie - game for shower??
They did this at my baby shower. It was very cute. They used fabric markers and I can't remember what else. I never put the onesies on DD, but I do have them as a cute keepsake. Not sure if the expense is "worth it" though...but very cute!

Re: Decorate a onesie - game for shower??
We did this at our shower & it was a hit. We will be using all the onesies. I have a friend who went to a baby shower & they did this & then the Mom took pictures of the baby in the onesie & sent it to the person that created it. I thought that was so sweet!
We had a great time going through them all. Each reflected the personality of each family.
We priced out onesies & found they were all about the same. We ended up getting some at Target. All size ranges too. We did one per family (estimate).
We bought fabric markers from Micheal's. There are a couple different brands, one did not require you to iron before washing to set the color. The other, which was Crayola did, but it also said you could put it in the dryer & that worked out fine.

Re: Decorate a onesie - game for shower??
We did the onsies at my shower and everyone loved it....even my 90 year old great aunt decorated one. Then we hung them on a clothesline and I went and picked two winners and they got a prize. I ordered everything online from Amazon. I put two sets of fabric markers on each table (tables of 6-8).onsies
crayola markers
I absolutely will put in them and think they are a great keepsake
ETS: Just wanted to add that no real prepwork is needed. We just gave everyone a piece of paper to put inside the onesie so the marker wouldnt leak through.

I agree with some of the other posters. It's a nice idea but I wouldn't use any of the onesies. I might use the bibs though.

Re: Decorate a onesie - game for shower??
I love this idea, and I would totally have used the onsies!
I just heard about these fabric crayons -where you draw on regular paper with them, and then you just iron the peice of paper onto the onesie and the design transfers. That might make for a softer onsie, as opposed to having actual paint on it.
Great idea!

maybe have the grandparents do the onsies and make them into keepsakes for her...frame them or something cute...then have guests do the bibs?

Re: Decorate a onesie - game for shower??
To be completely honest, I don't think I would put my DC in a guest decorated onesie. Sorry. It is a cute idea, but unless you have extremely talented friends and family it might be a waste of $.

Re: Decorate a onesie - game for shower??
Thanks everyone!! Lots of great suggestions and things to think about. I like the idea of doing bibs too. I'm going to have to price things out and see if it's even feasible. This is her second baby shower and she wants to invite the same number of people as her first shower (60-70) so I may not be able to swing it, but we'll see.

Re: Decorate a onesie - game for shower??
I went to a shower & we did this. I thought is was so different and such a great idea. We decorated the onesie with puffed paint. The only downside to that is you need a place to lay them out to dry. I'm not sure if she ever used them but I think just having them is awesome. If it was done for me at my mom's shower I would love to see them now!

Re: Decorate a onesie - game for shower??
I am crashing here but... I doubt I would use the onesies either, but i would definitely use bibs decorated this way. They would probably be more cost effective as well. Very cute idea though, I have never seen this.

Re: Decorate a onesie - game for shower??
oh yeah i was gonna add - if you do this, go with fabric markers, not "puffy paint" that'll come off in the wash but markers i'm assuming are more permanent :)
