Deep cleaning an area rug?

We have a 5x8 rug in our living room that has a bit of a funk to it. I'm not sure if the dog peed on it somewhere, if my son spilled something on it, we can't quite seem to nail down the culprit, but it stinks.

We've tried almost everything - the Dyson pet stuff, Febreeze, OxyClean.... Short of throwing it out, what else can we do? Are there places that will dry clean something like this? Chat Icon

Do you have a carpet cleaning machine?

If not, I would try this b/c I have the same issues all the time with my dog and kids.

I take it outside on a nice day and put it flat on the patio. I hose it down with the jet spray. Pour vinegar over it (neutralizes odor and dog pee so the dog doesn't pee there again). I leave the vinegar for like 10 minutes to soak in while I go in search of other cleaning suppies. Then wash it with whatever I have like laundry detergent or dish soap. I use a long handle brush that is a car snow scraper and scrub the rug down. Hose and hose and hose until it runs clear. Drape on outdoor furniture/chairs to dry. Usually takes 1 full day to dry on hot day and two for not so hot.

I've saved a lot of rugs this way.
