Defiant Students
I am grasping at straws here and I know it's a long shot to actually find a solution......but does anyone have any suggestions for completely defiant students? High school age and please nothing dealing with parents or administrators. I need to find something that just involves me and the students. ANY advice would be much appreciated. TIA

high school is a tough age…the only thing I can think of is maybe finding out something he/she enjoys…listening to his/her iPod? going on the computer? speak with him/her about things he likes…then maybe using it.. "if you can get this work done..at the end of the period, ill allow for 5 (or more) minutes of iPod time?

Rewards can work - even something as simple as stickers/candy. This will not work for all students, but it will get some more on board.
I also tried to build connections with students by implementing a strategy known as "Good News" on Mondays. Students would share a positive story from their weekend. Sharing was optional, but it made students feel more welcomed in the class. It is from a program called "Capturing Kids Hearts." It really helps to foster a positive classroom environment.
You can also look into giving preferred activity time when tasks are accomplished in the time frame which you give. For each task successfully completed in the allotted time, they get x minutes of preferred activity. One of my old coworkers used this when he worked at a difficult school and he said the students positively responded. He got the information from a book, but I can not remember the title. If you want more info about it, let me know and I will ask him.

Thanks for the responses. I love the "good news" Monday idea and I know rewards should work. I think my issue goes a little deeper than this though. I mean COMPLETELY DEFIANT......like yelling and causing a scene. I have my bag of tricks of course, but the other day literally nothing worked and this lasted for 40 minutes and ruined the class for everyone. Just looking for a fresh perspective.

It may actually be a medical issue. If the child has ODD (Oppositional Defiance Disorder), no amount of prizes, rewards, awards, etc, will *ever* work. It's a documented, medical condition. I know you don't want to involve the parents or administration, but from what you said, I think they have to be involved.
It would be detrimental to the child if they weren't at least checked for this. Undiagnosed, and they will be labelled a problem child for the rest of their lives. If they get diagnosed, they can work on controlling their emotions, and hopefully learn to avoid tantrums.

Just wondering why you say not involving admin or parents. I know some administrations function better than others, but imo no student should be carrying on like that for 40 minutes and be allowed to stay in the classroom. It's almost like giving permission for them to act that way, kwim? I've had students with ODD and students who don't but still behave that way. It sucks! I think you have to figure out what will motivate that particular student. Prizes, positive attention, homework passes, extra credit, attending extra curricular that they're involved in, talking to a coach if they're in a sport.

At this point, I would need to get an administrator involved. At my first job, I taught in a rough district and would have been hesitant to do so, but now I realize that it is simply not fair to the other students. If you can build a repertoire with the rest of the students, maybe that will help dissuade the student from his behavior.

Have you ever tried Whole Brain Teaching? I LOVE it!! I have used it for three years. I am a special ed teacher and have had success with this with defiant students....although it's something you have to read through the site and watch the videos for better understanding because it's involved, but start with level one and go from there (you may have to skip to level 3 from what it sounds like.)

I think the single most important thin you can do with a student like that is build a relationship with them. Talk about stuff not related to school and pick your battles They need to feel like they are in control. You have to give choices. Do you think this student would like to help or have computer te during their lunch?

YES!!!! Thank you this is exactly what I was looking for........a new perspective. I said no parents or administrators because I do not get support from those avenues. So I often need to handle things myself. And if I said one student I meant to say like 5 in one class. Its such an undesirable situation.

Yes I understand. It's the same in my school as well. If you really commit to whole brain teaching it will work. Don't be afraid to start now. The kids will really like it and you will too. If you need help with it or explanation let me know. But start with the 5 rules and level one. Then go from there.

We have "concern meetings" at our school when the student gets really out of hand. The student's counselor is the mediator and the teacher just explains what needs to be changed in the class and asks for suggestions. It's away from the class and there is another adult present. It has to be approached in a way where the student does not feel ganged up on though.
I also agree with building a rapport. I used to do a lot of journaling with the students because it allowed them to express themselves and connect on a level that was not just teacher-student.
Tough students just need to know that you care and you won't give up on them (usually).

You really need the admin to step in. I had a kid like that who ended up in self contained and then sent to an entirely different building.
